Exclusive: Katherine Jenkins sings for Streisand

April 27, 2009

Piers is currently out in LA for America’s Got Talent, but whilst he’s hard at work in the entertainment capital of the world he’s kindly promised to break a few showbiz exclusives right here on officialpiersmorgan.com.

Keep checking back to find out exactly what Piers reveals about whom as he travels the US judging the auditions…but to kick things off here’s a great little story about Welsh opera singer, Katherine Jenkins who’s currently trying to crack America.

Katherine Jenkins So, here’s a little breaking showbiz news story for you all.

I was having dinner with opera star Katherine Jenkins and some friends in Los Angeles last night, and she revealed that she sang privately for Barbra Streisand the night before.

How cool is THAT? The story behind it is even cooler.

Katherine, who is here making an album with hotshot music producer David Foster, was getting ready for bed at her hotel on Friday evening when she suddenly got a phone call from Foster asking her if she fancied going to Streisand’s 67th birthday party.

She got dressed faster than Chris Moyles races to a McDonalds with a Big Mac voucher, and hurried down to the venue - a vast mansion in Bel Air.  And that’s when Foster sprang his biggest surprise.

“I want you to sing for Barbra,” he said.  I’ll let Katherine take up the story.

“I was completely shocked and had nothing prepared. But David and I sat round the piano and quickly chose an aria to sing. By which time about 100 people had walked into the room including all these huge stars like Warren Beatty and Hugh Jackman, and of course Barbra.  “And so I sang the aria, and then David asked me to sing Happy Birthday to Barbra too, so I did that. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. She is one of my heroines.”

Only in Hollywood, folks.
