Justice for the Gurkhas.
April 30, 2009
I come from a big military family.
My brother’s a colonel who has done two tours of Iraq, and recently went to Afghanistan; my brother-in-law was a colonel who trained Princes William and Harry at Sandhurst; my uncle a major who once worked alongside Falklands hero Colonel H. Jones; my grandfather a commando; and my great uncle won the George Cross.
All of them would agree about one thing: the Gurkhas are some of the finest soldiers in the world.
They’re incredibly loyal, hard-working, determined and aggressive men who have played a big part in most of Britain’s battles in the last 100 years.
They’re also, from my personal experience, utterly charming, unfailingly courteous, deeply honourable human beings who take huge pride in fighting to defend our freedom.
All of which makes Gordon Brown’s bizarre attempt to try and restrict so many of them from living in this country all the more reprehensible.
I’m delighted that the government lost its ridiculous bill, and I applaud actress Joanna Lumley, and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, for their spirited efforts in redressing this gross injustice.

Good morning - couldn’t agree more.
Except, perhaps the word ”aggressive” might be changed for ‘eager’ or determined ?

Totally agree. If the PM’s looking to restrict a group of people living in the UK (which is actually not such a bad idea) WHY THE HECK target the Gurkhas?! I am very very disappointed. But glad to see there is still the freedom to oppose those in power when they seem to be making unreasonable propositions. Perhaps I dream of a day when we don’t have to oppose them…but maybe that would be impossible…………or just boring?
I like your rants Piers. I hope to rant one day when I am intelligent enough to justify my opinions!

Absolutely! There should be a question on the immigration form, ‘Are you a Gurkha?’ if the answer to this question is yes, your application has been accepted.

Hello Piers,
I wholeheartedly agree with you and Joanna and Nick are to be applauded for the stance they have taken on this issue. All the Gurkhas should be able to remain here, they are wonderful men and I’d like to know where we would have been without them. My husband completed 22 years service in the army and both of us felt ashamed at the governments decision earlier in the week. Considering the leeching lowlife this government sees fit to allow into Britain it just goes to show how lowthey can sink. At least a breakthrough has now been made.
