In Defence of Susan Boyle
May 28, 2009

Imagine, if you will, being anonymous for 47 years of your life, and then suddenly being propelled into genuine world superstardom.
For many people, it would be a dream come true. All that fame and attention, and the prospect of all that money to come with it down the line.
But let me tell you now, there is a downside to fame. People start criticising you, sniping at you, trying to trip you up, belittle you, harass you.
The pressure from sudden global success can be enormous.
Everywhere you go, people recognise you and want a piece of you - an autograph, a photo, a quick song, a chat to their mum on a mobile phone.
You can’t got out any more without being mobbed in the streets. You can’t nip down the supermarket for a pint of milk or go to the paper shop.
That pressure, too, can take its toll on close family and friends. They don’t know quite how to deal with it either. Suddenly they’re all caught up in this insane, relentless goldfish bowl.
All the fun of being propelled into international acclaim starts to disappear. And you start to feel jittery, self-conscious, paranoid, and fractious.
Then imagine, too, having all this go on when you are days away from the final of a competition that can make or break your career and your life.
A competition that everyone expects you to win, a fact that in itself piles on even more pressure.
This is exactly the situation that Susan Boyle now finds herself in.
And my heart absolutely bleeds for the poor woman.
I picked up the papers this morning, and saw a load of headlines ridiculing Susan for a supposed incident where is said to have heard me tell Shaheen Jafagholi he had given the ‘best singing performance of the semi-finals’ and gone mad - flicking V-signs and shouting ‘**** off’, before storming off to her hotel bedroom.
She was said to be angry because I, her ‘favourite judge’, had backed another contestant.
Susan denies this happened, and I wasn’t there, so I don’t know what really went on.
But I’ve seen the photos of her arguing with policemen after a furious altercation with a reporter who later asked her about it, and I’ve read the incredibly bitchy comments exploding all over various websites about her behaviour.
And you know what?
It made me very, very angry.
Susan Boyle is a very kind, generous-hearted, lady who has had a pretty tough life. She was deprived of oxygen during her birth, and that left her with ‘learning difficulties’, causing her to be called ‘Simple Susan’ at school.
She’s only been able to have one brief job in her life, but rather than feel sorry for herself she dedicated all her time to helping her ageing, ailing mother until she died two years ago.
She’s never married, and memorably declared she’d ‘never even been kissed.’
But she’s always, according to people who knew her well, been a fun-loving, popular woman who would do anything to help others, including devoting considerable unpaid time and effort to her local church and community as a volunteer.
I’m not saying she’s a Saint. But I am saying that before all this fuss, Susan was generally considered by everyone who met her to be a genuinely lovely person. Albeit, one with a lively, feisty character, and a wonderfully eccentric sense of humour.
That’s why I feel so upset to see all the distress she is currently suffering from all the media and public furore.
Susan is finding it very, very difficult to cope, and to stay calm.
She has been in tears many times during the last few days, and even, fleetingly, felt like quitting the show altogether at one point and fleeing all the attention.
She’s had to read stories and columns, and listen to radio and TV phone-ins, calling her arrogant, insincere, spoiled, fake, mad and so on.
Now, I have been called all that and worse in my career, but I spent 20 years in Fleet Street and know how to deal with it.
Susan Boyle has never experienced anything like this and is like a frightened rabbit in headlights.
I am calling today for everyone to just give her a break.
She is two days away from the biggest day of her life, and all she wants to do is sing well for everyone and hopefully try and win.
She’s not a mass murderer, a thieving banker, or an expense-fiddling politician.
Susan’s just a sweet, middle-aged lady from a Scottish village, who can’t really comprehend the sheer scale of what’s happened to her.
And far from decrying her, shouldn’t we all be celebrating the amazing journey she has gone on, and the fact that she has done more for the reputation of Britain in the last month than anyone for a very long time.
As I said after her performance on Sunday night, Susan has given new hope and inspiration to a world battered by recession with her voice, and her story.
200 million people have now watched her YouTube clip, more than any other clip in history, and she is a household name from Russia to China, Australia to Africa.
Becoming the biggest star on the planet so fast is a scary, unsettling, upsetting thing, as Susan has discovered.
Let the increasingly unpleasant bitching and carping stop, right now. Please. She doesn’t deserve it.

Good for you Piers! Truly a gentleman and I’m so glad you posted this. Let’s hope those who find it entertaining to try to break her hopes and dreams have the guts to publish this post you made to the papers, radio etc. Your compassion to her is admirable. You’ve got her back and that means a lot to those of us who are supporting her efforts to fulfill her dream.

morning Piers. I’m not a fan of Susan’s singing - I know I’m in the minority! I do agree with what you say though, she must have quite enough on her plate without having to endure all this. The trouble is, when people are put on a very tall pedestal by the media, it seems to me, that in some cases, they take delight in trying to knock it down. She might find it easier if she avoids the news and the papers and just goes into her “own bubble” so to speak. I’m not media savvy, but that’s how it appears to me. I would like to see Flawless or Diversity win but I do wish Susan all the very best for Saturday.

WELL SAID, PIERS!! Thank you for writing this. I needed to hear it from you because I was very distraught yesterday when I heard all the bad news. No one deserves this, especially Susan. Like many of her fans, I felt I wanted to come to London to protect her. She really does need protecting and now that the newspapers have had their field day at her expense, perhaps they could find something nice to write about - all the good she has done throughout her life, put others before herself. She has touched the lives of so many people throughout the world and brought so much joy through her singing. You should read some of the thousands of blogs from her fans, people who were once very lonely, had nothing going for them, on the verge of giving up. Susan has given them all a new purpose to their life.. MAY GOD BLESS HER AND KEEP HER SAFE!!

Dear Piers,
Many of Susan’s fans all over the world understand what Susan is going through and we are very protective of her. It is difficult for Susan to adjust to her new found stardom.
I don’t know about the incident of Susan and Shaheen but you did say after Shaheen finished singing last Saturday night that he was the best that you had heard and it was reported that Susan was very upset. I know the media can blow things out of proportion and likes to make the news instead of just reporting it. So, I don’t know what happened either. That being said I don’t understand why Susan gets crucified for missing a note because of nerves and Shaheen gets off scot free even though he messed up on the start of his song last Saturday night. Can someone please tell me what the difference is because I certainly don’t understand it.
At any rate I hope Susan comes out Saturday in the finals and belts out a song and knocks the socks off of everyone. She has the talent and the voice range to do just that. I have complete confidence in Susan and support her all the way. I expect Susan will have a great simging career making CD’s and most likely Andrew Lloyd Webber and possibly Broadway.
Susan has already won hearts all over the globe I think except for Lily Allen who I had never heard of. And Susan has made everyone at BGT known all over the world to people that has never heard of the show or those involved. So, Kudos for Susan. She has a great musical career in front of her and her fans will be there for her all the way.

Well said! I’d love to see Susan win because she was so much an ‘ordinary’ person who has an extraordinary voice. Unfortunately that’s what has catapulted her into the hearts of most of us, but inevitably made her the target of a few, especially those who crave the fame she has stumbled upon. She has more pressure than anyone else because of that, but there’s many of us less vocal who ARE cheering for her. Thank you Piers for being spokesman for those of us who care.

It’s quite obvious that Susan has developed a crush on you Piers (and she’s certainly not the only one, you are 100% more sexy than Simon) and she was undoubtedly overwhelmed by your wonderfully kind attention and the adoration from around the whole world following her stunning audition. But let’s not forget this is a talent contest, and the judges and the public have to pick the performance they consider the most talented and ultimately the best entertainment. Susan’s audition shocked and wowed everybody because it was so unexpectedly good, but Susan is not a natural born entertainer. An entertainer needs to exude confidence and requires the ability to accept not only the compliments but also the barrage of criticism and knocks anyone in the public eye inevitably receives. Susan, I feel, is far too sensitive a person to cope with this. Susan is a lovely lady and I wish her all the luck in the world - whether she wins the contest or not she undoubtedly has a singing career ahead of her. But I can’t help thinking she will be a whole lot happier when the whole thing is over and the fuss dies down.

Piers,
I would like to add one more thing to my previous posting. There is a man who was on the edge of committing suicide and he stated when he heard Susan sing it made him stop and her voice gave him hope. That is how Susan’s voice affects a lot of people. That might sound weird to some but Susan does have an effect on people. I don’t always understand it but there it is. That is something for all of us to ponder.

Dear Mr. Morgan,
I was more than glad to read your comments on Susan Boyle. I’m just one among millions of people who got to know her through YouTube, but from her eyes and smiles (and from my life experience), I have no doubt what you said about her is true.
I always want to say to those people who love to speak ill of others, “Look in the mirror and see how ugly you look.” I wonder if they can spend their time for anything else.
BTW, speaking of FLAWLESS and Diversity, I love the eyes and expressions on the faces of those youngsters - full of hope and happiness. I personally think FLAWLESS is superb, but wish both of them luck in the finals, too.

Susan Boyle's fan says
I don’t live in UK, so I can’t get hold of your local papers, but I get information from the internet to follow Susan’s progress with BGT. I was very shocked that all the papers were writing horrible things about her, and I don’t beleive that she would swear in front of 150 people in the hotel because you, her favourite judge had over praised another contestant. The BGT spokes person had confirmed that Susan and her friends had left the room before Shaheen performed because a reporter had wanted to interview her. She went back to her own room.
All her fans know that she is under a lot of pressure, but she has manage to cover her stress with her wicked sense of humour. For Susan to be away from the little village that she was borned and raised and to be staying at the hotel in London, is very scary, not to mention the competition and the press. She probably feel so insecure outside her familiar environment. Who does she talk to to relieve that build up stress?
Even if she was upset with your over praised comment on that boy’s perfomance, she has every right to be, because you did say that the boy’s performance was the best of the semis. Piers she just performed the night before. Susan I think can handle competition, but I think you Piers are a distraction for her. Piers, you are a good judge, always softening negative comments to make the contestants feel better, unlike Simon who will say it as it is (he is like that too with American Idol contestants), and it does hurt people a lot. But you did not have to play with her emotions. You gave Susan the impression that you could be a friend, invited her for a romantic dinner in London, offering to give her her first kiss. What is all that when you know that she never dated anyone before and here is Piers, a good looking man, well mannered, intelligent, offer to take her to dinner. If she is 20 years old, she would probably not take you seriously because she would have all the time in the world to date and find somebody, but she is 47 years old and she is serious about frienship and relationship. Piers you had led her to believe that you truly treated her as a friend of some sort. You have disturbed her inner tranquility. She was coping well with life before she met you. Right now Susan really need a friend (NOT YOU) to help her deal with this pressure.
You need not worry about Susan because I think she will pull all her anger and frustration and use them in positive way, i.e sing her heart out in the final and blow all you lot out. She is stronger than you think. Just let her follow her dreams and full fill them. As for coping with show business success, she will learn eventually.

I was worried for Susan from the very beginning, because I had my 10 minutes fame once in my life and know how difficult it is to go through any attention, if you are just a little simple human being.

Excellent ! Thanks for taking the defence of Susan Boyle. As so you say, she deserves better that this rubbish from the Sun and others. For us, fan (I am member of the fine susan-boyle.com website, and the very first time i become a fan of anybody), we do not take this too seriously, even if it upset us a bit. Even if she had lost her temper a bit, she will recover like she did last Sunday and provide her very best performance next Saturday and be crowned. This is what she deserves it ! And what she desires the most : to sing in front of the Royal Family ! If not, she will be a professional singer anyway and sell millions, we all know that. God bless.

Thank you for speaking up for Susan. I can’t believe what Lily Allen said. I never heard of this pop star until today,I read about her comments on the Susan Boyle fansite and it made my blood boil! Not only was it mean spirited ,it was just plain dumb ! Think about it,Susan never even heard of youtube, she didn’t put herself forward ,she simply sang and the world embraced her. Is Lily going to tell me a fan of Susan Boyle I don’t know my own preferances? How can Susan be overrated?! Her fans simply love her. I love Susan’s singing, her sense of humor and she is just plain cute! I love the “Piersy Jig “,it was so cute. She is just as sweet as can be. I love that woman! I’ll sum it up this way, Susan came to my attention because she impressed me with her singing and personality.

Piers,
When you offered your friendship to Susan in actions & words… and maybe more than friendship….That was a pledge to be true to that friendship. Granted, you are in a bit of an awkward situation being a judge & an admirer of Susan, but… you put your self very publically in that spot. So, PLEASE, show SUSAN, even more than the world, fans, news rags, (& I AM glad that you are speaking out for her!) that you are truly HER friend. The charm & heart that she has & the naivete, is what draws you to her. Those same wonderful qualities make her uniquely vulnerable to what you do & say. She lights up when she looks at you - especially when she is singing. I believe she makes it through the nerves by singing to you. You can give her so much in your friendship - please do.
Stand tall, stand humble, stand true to what is right & honorable because Susan is leaning on you -Stand by & for Susan.
Blessings & prayers are still coming your way & to Susan’s. She is on a unique & unexpected journey & you are part of that no matter what, now.

I cried out of shame of critizing her looks.
BUT most of all I cried because Susan decided at her age to follow her dream.
She gave us hope… and a lot more
Please look after her… win or loose.
Wish her the best of luck!

Thank you, Piers Morgan, to even that in the right time when it is needed. - Even because you know how to handle all this media affairs and causes with all your expierences in Fleet Street.
An innocent person, like Susan Boyle is, living in her own little life for 47 Years could not imagine what that means to handle with that jealous nasty commenders and ly-sprayers. To defight this she isn’t made off. - And that is for sure. She neither deserve such a worse press nore is there any serious reason to put such things on her. Because she isn’t a mass murderer, a thieving banker, or an expense-fiddling politician as you truely said. For bad comments and reports there is enough stuff to write on which is realy true. More than any other I would wish for Susan Boyle to give her a break to relax and calm down. I hope she can find some of this after the final.
I hope she will move on stage on that Saturday with a performance that knows the house down to earth - breathless, magnificent and delightful.
With best regards

Piers - Susan needs to realize ‘the public’ are not her friends. Her fans, those she reaches beyond the footlights out there in the world, are the ones she should focus on. Susan does not owe anyone her private life or heart, except as she chooses to share them, on her own terms as an artist, through the medium of her art. Please find a moment to tell her this. Perspective is what she needs. That, a bit of quiet time at mass - and maybe hugs from Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, a bit of xanax, a glass of sparkling merlot…a good night’s rest, a few hours in a relaxing sauna. Then, back at it for the finals! after which she can inwardly tell all the ill-wishers to f*** off. Heh. ;->

Susan..susan is more alone. She doesn’t have the props so many do to help them get through the bad parts but she is doing it better than i could.
“all my life i have striven to show i am not a worthless person like they think i am”. Imagine living with that belief and attitude from others then reading the CRAP in the papers the last couple of days. I know you and amanda and simon will always be fair judges..if she had bombed completely you would have said so, but i do hope you all realize that there is an added responsibility to her. Amanda got a job in the US thanks to Susan. BGT has had its profile internationally raised immensely thanks to her. So all of you need to take a minute to be a friend as well. Perhaps a friend who tells the truth when judging but a friend none the less. It isn’t as if we need to know about private conversations, but please remind her she has proven she is not worthless and win or lose she is a star and will be a greater one.
p.s. tell amanda to take back her longevity comment. Susan doesn’t need that. She may or may not have it, but if it wasn’t for susan then her star may have flamed out sooner too!

I believe she was in tears before the finals and felt like giving up.
It’s really great to know someone can empathise with Susan as I’m sure a great many of us do.
Your right she brought so much inspirations and happiness to all of us throughout the world and to see the lovely peaceful expression on your face was just great.
My husband cried after listening to her sing and i have never heard him do that before. So she touched him.
There must be so much pressure on her.

Dear Piers: I agree with every word you say, and applaud that you said it. The problem is that Susan needs to cocoon herself, away from the press and the public, and can’t. As you say, she’s gone from a normal quiet person into a target; these days the anonymity of the web means anyone can be as rude as they like and hurt, without repercussions {isn’t it awful how many people are secretly glass-totally-empty people?]. Susan is the first real victim of today’s instant, global technology. And, with her backstory, she doesn’t have the experience [I don't know how anyone would have] to handle the result. I am embarrassed to be a human being. Of course, having read some of the comments, I’m sure the hosters of these comment boards don’t read the posts - because with the good, you read the bad. So, in case I am wrong, best wishes to you for standing up (a former media person too!), and Susan for courage and luck, and learning how to learn what to hear and what to ignore. Trinity in Canada.

I would like to congratulate on such an admirable defence. The English tabloids famed for building you up so that they can bring you down prove their fickleness once more. Something certainly needs to be done to raise standards. Susan Boyle is a woman who was propelled to fame by the media, she simply had an opportunity to portray her talent and took this opportunity. All she did was entertain us. Yet the press coverage she has received of recent is worse than that of politicians who have screwed us.

The following was issued from BGT website
“If you thought Susan Boyle looked nervous when she stepped on stage to sing Memory, you’d be right. That’s because during rehearsals, Susan nearly fell over as she walked toward her microphone, on the stage.
She told us, “I got a bit of shock during rehearsals - I nearly fell flat on my face”!
To keep accidents at bay, the soles of Susan’s shoes were scored so they gripped better - and Susan breathed a sigh of relief when she made it across the stage!
The Lothian lady enjoyed her time backstage preparing - although the pampering made her a little perplexed.
She told us, “Every few minutes, someone comes up to me and asks me to back to make-up”.
“I’ve been in there three times already - but I keep going back again”.
“It’s all going to be very thick by the time we get to show time”.
“It’s a job that’s never finished - like painting the Forth Bridge!”
The official report from her hotel was that Susan was in her private quarters when the supossed incident occurred.

I feel so bad for Susan. This backlash is just so typical of English culture these days - the ‘build them up then knock them down.’
Susan, however, has a secret weapon against all this negativity. Her voice and her self-belief. She’ll triumph throughout all this negativity - and, once again, prove not only to the British public, but to the world, that she is a person with an incredible talent and a wonderful person who is a fantastic representative for this country.

For the press to focus on behavior that is clearly the result of the stress she is under is unforgivable! Thank you Piers, I really need to hear this from you too. I was so mad yesterday whold day after I read those rubish story about Susan. I was upset with you too, so I left a couple of messages on this site. I have to say that I was start to lose confidence in Brit. people as I wonder why they are always so negative. I spent much of time yesterday to comment on those papers to try to hit them back. I hope all those papers to print out your article, so everyone can see it. Also, I think BGT should take Susan to a secluded spot, let her calm down, have bit of rest before the finals.

Those who surround Susan should perhaps encourage her to know that there is not only bad media but also good media as well….ive somethings thought of them like cholesterol…you have your good and bad types. Those closest to her over the next couple of days should surround her with what the good media types are saying and seek to help her focus on that.. Hoping that Susan does well in the final and that she wins the competition but if not she should be encouraged to know that she’s acieved the success of wanting to have a music career for we love her around the world and await her CD and hopefully more after that one.

Hope, Mr.Morgan, is what keeps us running on that wheel from one day to the next - and Ms.Boyle, I believe, gives everyone a good dose of hope.

Rico from Scotland says
Piers,
I agree that she has been getting a bit of unfair abuse lately, but I think part of the problem lies in the fact that the media (and yourselves) portrayed her to be an absolutely sensational singer and made a big deal of her small village background.
In all honesty this is a blatant exaggeration, she is an OK singer from a fairly pleasant background. I’m not taking her learning difficulties into account because whilst they may hamper her in some regard and I sympathise with her about that, they have no bearing on her singing ability. Many of the competitors came from a much more challenging backgrounds, and have been much more entertaining than Susan.
The contestants’ backgrounds have - and I must stress this - absolutely no impact on whether I vote for someone. Its purely down to how well they perform on the day.
Susan is for sure an ok singer, but does that make her a better entertainment act than the likes of Diversity? or Flawless? or Shaheen? Or MD Showgroup? They all entertained me much more than Susan did. Kudos to MD btw for dedicating their performance to victims of violent crime. Well done, we could do with more selflessness in these contests.
The point is, you had a hand in creating the situation because you put her on the pedestal she is now on, and made her out to be the best contestant you’ve ever had (”The biggest yes I’ve ever given”) when she’s clearly not. No wonder the press won’t leave her alone.
I wish her well on Saturday, but there are others who have entertained me more, and in that regard, I shall be taking my votes elsewhere.

I hope this can get shown around a lot more, and I admire you for writing it, because as a journalist, It is part of your career to write articles about people, so it takes someone strong to be able to see the faults within their own careers and background.
I think you have been a fantastic judge this series, and if im being honest, I have never been particularly fond on you, in fact you were my least favourite judge, but I think this year, you are now MOST DEFINITLY my favourite, you have been geniune, honest and really considerate of the feelings of the contestants, instead of treating them like performing animals.

Well said, Piers. Susan has had an appearance make-over, but needs some GENTLE lessons on appropriateness. She is reacting to all the attention the way a young teen would, and it is not very becoming. Her voice reflects dignity, but her actions have not, going back to her first performance and that wiggle. She has an amazing talent, she should rest on her laurels and settle down, girl. Piers, My opinion of you in the past has been shaped by some not-so-nice things I’ve read (what’s new?), but your kind defence of SB (& your face when you watched her singing!) has turned me around entirely.
The new media can give frighteningly great fame, but also means that every mean-spirited soul knows everything blow-by-blow and is free to comment. Susan went to it like a lamb to slaughter, & I truly hope that BGT will help her get out of this mess once it’s all over.
Win or lose she should be comfortably off, so here’s hoping she can buy a manor house & go & live there with Pebbles & other good friends. Of course Susan hasn’t got the greatest voice in the world, but she has plenty of quality & an open, pure honesty that is uniquely appealing. I for one look forward to owning some of her work.
Please give her plenty of encouragement and reassurance from her many new friends.

Susan Boyle is an inspiration to millions of people.
I have been heartily sickened by the way the media has portrayed her. Susan is, at this time, incredibly vulnerable. The way she has handled herself so far has been dignified and humble.
Considering the mistakes the media have made including even the title of the song she sang I would take any of their derogatory comments with the attention they deserve. Susan has never claimed to be anything more than an ordinary person and any reaction from her considering what she has been through from these imbeciles is certainly not out of the ordinary.

PLEASE help Susan get to a quiet place to get herself “together”. Way too much stress and complaints when she even practices her singing. ( the one thing she feels “safe” with )
Susan is an emotional person to begin with , that is why so many of us “feel” her when she sings.
She does not just sing the words- she puts herself into the song. Joy is only one part of emotions, hurt, frustration, anger, are also part of that human emotion. I don’t blame her at all for “losing” it under the circumstances.
Please help her feel SAFE !!!!!!!! That is so important !!!!!! And yes, I love her the way she is !!!!!

Thanks for offering those kind words for Su-Bo. I can’t believe she didn’t snap just having all the media parked outside her home. I highly suggest more security to separate her from the feeding frenzy of the tabloids. The name Susan Boyle is selling papers. Lily Allen now gets a ton of hits on YouTube and media attention off of the back of Susan Boyle. People want to make money off of SB. If I were Susan Boyle, I’d just isolate myself in a suite of rooms with family and friends. I’d completely turn off the television, computer and not read the papers until after Saturday. She needs to get “centered”. She has the ability to win but with all of this craziness going on, it’s completely unfair to expect her to live up to her abilities. I imagine Shaheen is having a great time playing with his pal the little Greek boy. These others are not getting the sh*t thrown at them that SB is. She requires special treatment. Please help her to get it.

It may be true that she couldn’t deal with your comments about the younger singer; I think I’d have had hurt feelings too. For me, life would go on, but depending on the part of the brain affected by the oxygen deprivation her own ability to cope with such disappointments may have been impaired. If she is physically incapable of dealing with this kind of emotional pressure, it follows that she absolutely needs protection from strangers like the ones who tweaked her at her hotel.

I, with all my heart hope the best for this beautiful woman with the voice of an angel. It has been a very, very long time indeed before anyone has given me goosebumps listening to a song, in particular a woman. Everything about her is to love & I really think she is beautiful, from the inside out.
The press really needs to get their act together & leave her alone. I hope she remembers that sticks & rocks can break your bones–but words can never hurt you.
I speak for many friends here in Arkansas.
Tell her we wish her the best & we cannot wait to hear the next beautiful song. I hope she knocks everyones socks off.
Sincerely

Good for you Piers!! Well said!! It’s absolutely amazing to me how people can be so cruel. Susan is trying her best to achieve a lifetime dream & here comes the poison darts to destroy. Never fails. Bless her heart! When she came into this competition, she had no idea what a sensation she would become. Right now, she needs good, caring, qualified people, to talk with her & help her cope. What a shame the vultures can’t wait until the competition is over to try to destroy her.

Piers, I hope that the press pays attention and backs off in regards to Susan. She appears to be a sweet lovely lady and she doesn’t deserve to be harrassed by the media - or anyone else for that matter. She has an amazing voice, and personally, I think your prediction of her selling 10 million CDs in the U.S. is a low estimate. I’m sure she will sell much more. And, as for that Lily Allen (whoever she is!) I’ve watched a video of her on youtube and in my opinion, Lily’s voice is mediocre and the only reason she has managed to record anything is because of the shock value of her filthy “lyrics.”
Susan doesn’t need filthy lyrics to get attention. She’s the real deal and I hope she wins that competition hands down and shows all of them what real talent is!

Thanks for sticking up for her. It is amazing that she did so well for so many weeks. But anyone would have worn down eventually. Why didn’t the producers protect her better? Couldn’t they see this coming?

Thanks you Piers for standing up for Susan. Like other posters have indicated I think that BGT has a responsibility to help Susan prepare for the final and to cope with this media onslaught. You have all profited enormously from this woman of modest circumstances - whisk her away from the madding crowd, find her former voice coach (who obviously did a marvelous job working with her) to help her prepare, and give her a personal assistant to help her cope with the madness. You owe at least that much - and clearly you have the decency to see that.

Thank you, Piers, for your wonderful article in defense of Susan. Anyone, under all that stress, would be upset and let out a curse when taunted by strangers. With her just beginning on this new road, BGT should hire someone to protect her from abusive reporters and anyone who might try to hurt her. She deserves some peace of mind and should given a quiet couple of days so she can relax, practice and regain her inner strength and courage so she can go back on that stage with full confidence that she can blow everyone’s mind away with her God-given talent. I hope she belts out a song that blows everyones socks off, as she did the first time. Again, thank you for your article and please be sure that Susan knows she has your support and true friendship. She trusts you!
Go, Susan and win!!!

I don’t think Susan has it in her to say anything bad about the others in this competition. I have heard her on our TV in the states saying positive things about them and how good she thinks they are.
Personally, I cant wait for this to all be over for her. I don’t even care if she wins. I wish she would because she deserves to win. But, Piers, someone needs to be taking care of her right now and getting her in the right frame of mind for her performance.

Hello Piers. My best regards from Finland. Thank you so much for your consolating, sweet words about Susan. She truely is a precious, sweet lady. And she has a lot to be given for the whole world. I hate this media nonsense, that always sees negative things first, without thinking any deeper. If it is true what she said, that she also had cold, that disturbed her singing, I think she sang perfectly. A Voice is the most difficult instrument of all to “play”. I know it myself. Please Piers, don´t leave Susan alone with this media nonsense… support her if you are able to. Just wishing she did not have to be alone. I appreciate that you wrote this column about Susan. It was a true gesture of a friend. Thank you. I wish you all the best.

I’m really glad you wrote this. Susan Boyle is not used to fame and hasn’t got the thick skin to cope with its trappings.
When asked what her success would mean to her she said “at least I won’t be lonely” and later she said that winning the show would “show that I am a worthwhile person”.
The loneliness of someone who lives alone, who has been bullied over the years, who struggled to find a job, would affect the self-esteem of anyone. Now, suddenly, she is poised to become a global star, no wonder she has nerves…..
I wish I could tell her that she is already a worthwhile person, and this doesn’t depend on winning a talent show. She has sacrificed her life to care for her parents, and while unemployed, has spent her time visiting the sick and housebound. I think Susan Boyle is a very decent person indeed, and her fans instinctively see this. Shame on all those who undermine her confidence.

Piers,
Thank you for trying to neutralize the tabloids. I hope when Susan performs Saturday night she can make it to the microphone safely, take a deep breath, and visualize singing in her favorite pub–and stay focused on that.
We love her voice, message, and humor, and we don’t want her to fall short. But if she does, we still support her.
Her long coat tails have provided greater fame for everyone associated with the show, and All the performers now have a world wide recognition, only thanks to her. They should be grateful for that. It is my view that because of this it is a win/win situation for all, thanks to Susan.
Take care and thanks for your compassion!

Piers, where are Susan´s sisters? Call them to help.. to give her massage, manicure.. something to entertain HER. Now the weekend is coming, they have free time maybe.
And surely the headlines are ridiculous and as far as I can think they are also not true.
If I got all the facts right.. there is an illogical chronological sequence.. First they say that Susan swore right after seeing Piers praising Shaheen .. but then they say that BEFORE THAT Susan was interviewed at the street by journalists who asked her about Shaheen being praised by Piers. How can that be possible?? No way. The journalists could NOT have seen the program because it was live. So the newspapers are not telling the trutht. They´re simply lying.

Dear Piers Morgan, thank you so much for posting this very well thought out defense of Susan Boyle. I only wish it would be reported as visibly as the negative statements made by others.
I agree with the views that BGT has some responsibility to protect Susan. The show (brilliant editing on the audition segment) clearly set out to take advantage of a potential marketing hit, but likely (as least I hope so) did so without realizing her vulnerability. BGT has received incredible publicity from all of this, and owes her a bit of support.

Piers, thank you for coming to Susan’s defense. I am in the USA and find it disgusting that fox news dot com has reprinted the sun article on their website, as if this is “news?” Unverified, unsubstantiated? And now they dangle the carrot, “in the coming hour we will share with you the meltdown of Susan Boyle.” Or something like that. It all stinks. The poor dear is likely a wreck by now. I hope she stays in her hotel room or rehearsal quarters until show time.

Thank you, that’s all I can say. Susan was not prepared for all this backlash. I have always thought you are a genuinely warm person and I truly like the way you have handled this situation. Susan has never backlashed any of her fellow contestants and I believe she in her heart wants to win but she also does not want to hurt anyone else in the process, you included. The media and these people have been trying to bring her down in the public eye. Now, lets hope people can still judge fairly from within. That’s all Susan wants is people to vote what is in their hearts. And, she can live with that!

No one deserves the media to be so hard on them, least of all Susan Boyle. She isn’t used to the attention and her sudden rise to fame would be to much for most people. Whether she wins or not she will still become a global star (well even more than she is already). Personally i don’t think she will win but not through any fault of her own. Everyone will expect her to win, so will vote for one of their other favourites, which means she won’t win. I feel sorry for her and hope she does well. Good luck Susan.

Well said, Piers. To Susan: I feared you might be overwhelmed by the “attention” which often can be translated as invasion, rudeness, even downright nastiness and more. Please try not to let it get to you. Don’t read the comments (or have someone vet them for you and give attention to only those that are appreciative and encouraging) There is nothing to say that we must take in the negatives in life.
Keep believing in yourself, do what it is that YOU want to do, but know that you will have detractors. That is simply the way of the world. Try and shut them out. You have a dream, it is still there for you to reach for. Go for it, I wish you the very, very best. Whatever happens, I will be waiting for your first commercial recording and will be there to buy it. Your voice gives pleasure and joy to my life.

Thank you, Piers, for posting your thoughts. I, too, am distressed at the nasty comments made toward Susan.
I wish everyone would just leave her alone, including those who are trying to make her over. Her beauty is inside, not the shiny paper, ribbon and bows they seem to be wrapping her with for her performances. She needs space and time to just be Susan.
So, she came unglued at some strangers’ comment(s) and spouted off at them? She could have decked them, so they should consider themselves lucky. If their comments are anything like those I’ve read on various websites, they deserved her ranting. If I’d been present, I would have helped her.
Go, Susan! There are millions of us loving you, lifting you up and hoping your next performance is as great as the first.

Susan probably should quit the show. She doesn’t need it anymore, and far important is her emotional well-being.
These tabloid attacks must remind her of the nasty behavior of the children in her neighborhood after her mom died. Only on a much larger scale.
What a nightmare for her. These people are simply evil.
Just when she thought the world was a better place for her. She really should have been better protected from the press.
She will be worldwide star with or without this competition and if I were her friend or relative, I would advise her to quit and take care of herself. She has a career ahead of her now and millions of fans all over the world. They would understand if she quit.
Just one more example of what this world is about. If only we could learn to ignore the morons.
Don’t buy their newspapers!
Btw, Piers, you too ought to stop using Susan’s popularity to further your own career. You should not play with her emotions, or any woman’s for that matter.

Susan has been the object of the most vitriolic verbal attacks here on yt. Commentators have made note of that in articles I’ve read. Do you think there’s no Susan has gotten a whif of that? Her publicist said that the people at the hotel were trying to wind her up. The paper also said that the people there, friends and families of the other contestants are expecting her to break any day on the show. She’s dealt with this all her life. The following is from Piers’ blog. Let’s not rush to judge.
In the incident at the hotel where she got very upset her publicist said the ohers there, which the paper says are friends and family of the other contestants, were trying to wind her up. They told the paper that they are expecting her to break any day during the show. This is what Susan has dealt with her whole life. Perhaps her biggest mistake was naively entering a contest with people who are just like those who’ve bullied her all her life and expecting to be treated fairly.
Her YT fans are incensed and they say:
I want to know how the other contestants are treating HER. I want to read about how the staff at BGT are making her feel? There are always two sides to these stories. Reporters are deliberately winding her up to get a reaction. They should be damn ashamed of themselves and why hasn’t Simon provided someone to be with her to neutralize these type things happening?

It is sad to see that, and it is sadder to see the British are doing that to their own people. I don’t read British newspaper obviously as I am from Hong Kong, but can imagine how they are like, given the previous photos with her flies down, and NO ONE told her that? They just took the pictures and mocked her for her flies being down, for her clothes not exactly fit?
Trust me, Piers, not only your heart was bleeding for her, we, the fans are all bleeding our hearts out. Everyone has a temper and the press was just pushing her to the limit (they want to anyway) and see when she will crack and then make another headline news and sell their papers.
No matter what, as Piers said somewhere, she is going to sell a lot of albums. I just read the Hong Kong newspaper, and the editor in chief was writing about Susan, he said he closed his eyes while to her song, and found that she was a natural gifted singer with a full round voice (I am sure there is a better English word) unlike more so-called pros, that are too articulated.
I hope she can stay calm, and think that all that is a joke. Like Winslet said, she never watched TV/newspaper and all that in order to remain sane, I think that’s what Susan needs to be doing. Have some room service, watch a fun movie, keep on practicing.
She has to know that many out there to support her, even she fell flat on her face in the final without singing one note, we would still stand up and clap, for who she is. She is a human being with an angelic voice, not a god, even god has temper for god’s sake!!

Piers,I have already put in my comments, and I still stick to my first comment, but I was so upset with the way you played with Susan’s emotions, that I did not give you credit for defending her with such a well written article. My apology for that. You have always been so articulate with your words, and who better to write an article to defend Susan but you. Thank you for that.
I am responding to Marge’s comment about Susan “reacting to attention like a young teen would”. Marge, Susan had live a very protected life up to now. For the rest of us, we leave home at a young age to go to university or college or even to work. We were given a chance to live our own life and fight our own conflicts in society. Susan had not been given that chance, that is why she is having difficulty dealing with those people outside her village, and hence it look like she was “reacting to attention like a young teen”. It cannot be easy for her to go out on the streets in London and facing those people. In her village, she is safe even with the press people camping outside her home, because she is in her own home and she has the whole village to protect her. Poor Susan I really feel for her.
I agree with some of you that suggest an assitant to protect Susan, especially when it is so close to the final, and also taking her out of that hotel. And somebody says no TV’s, no newspapers, I agree. I have no doubt that she will win the title, because she is really good, and I believe all her fans will still be behind her. Just look at all her fans i.e you lot, who are so quick to come to her defense. And she has so many more fans out there. As soon as she collect herself together, she will become that fiesty Susan, ready to blow those people away with her beautiful voice. She would now have more experience on a bigger stage after the semi. And DEMI MOORE AND HER HUSBAND will be at the final to support her. She will win.

Hi Piers, i too agree with you on this issue. I think that you are a true gentleman to come out in her defense.
i am not a big fan of Susan’s but she does have an amazing singing voice which is something that no-one can take away from her. I think it’s a shame that the media and anyone else involved in trying to put her down at such a time when it’s our support and praise is what she needs are nothing more than jealous wallies and could be held responsible for ruining this womans’ dreams. I find that in itself truely a tuly bigotted, selfish, intolerable and unforgivable attitude.

Btw, Piers, you too ought to not play with her emotions.
Don’t forget, it was Susan who made you all famous outside of Britain.
Anyhow, thanks for defending her, that was commendable of you.

Piers,
I thank you for being a “true gentleman”. Your blog message is “right on”! Susan Boyle IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ALL OF US FOR A LONG TIME!!!! With the world economy as it is, especially in the US, people losing their jobs and their homes — Susan IS A “GIFT FROM GOD”!!! Her talent is genuine and I know that people here in the US, love her and wish the best for her. I, personally hope she wins on Saturday, May 30, 2009. But if not, she has given us all - A GIFT OF HOPE, in these bad times and also she has had the guts to try for a chance to to sing before the Queen at your Royal Variety Show — if John Lennon(back in 1963) could “rattle your jewelry”(to the Queen in the audience), Susan could certainly, “sing her heart out” as well!!!

Thank you Piers for doing this, you are a gentleman. I note on the BGT Forums there are a lot of nasty comments regarding Susan. One in particular about this supposed rant at the hotel. What is it with some ‘journalists’ who deliberately wind people up, especially someone as nice as Susan, who is not used to their sometimes devious and manipulative ways, and then have it published in that comic The Sun. Seriously, if people believe this nonsense they ought to go boil their heads.
What I’d like to ask those who are rubbishing Susan is this: “If someone (a journalist, we are led to believe) and someone else, therefore 2 complete strangers accosted them in the street and started winding them up because they’d been on a talent show, they’d smile sweetly and tell them to go away? I don’t think so. This is just mass bullying and it should stop. Lets say for instance she did leave, people who think the way they do would just move on to the next target; admit it, they’re just bullies, and bullies never win.”
Piers, all this sniping and nastiness aimed at Susan is totally uncalled for, and people cannot get away with assuming a person is what the papers and media say they are, it is an assumption and therefore false.
The media are the real culprits in all of this, and I dread to think if I put myself forward for BGT (I can sing but don’t have the guts, courage and determination of lovely Susan to get up on that stage) and achieved any sort of fame, I could expect what is happening to Susan right now, the meticulously planned destruction of said fame (such as it might be) after they had built me up with loads of interviews, worldwide appearances etc with ‘journalists’ sent to wind me up, interviewers and the public goaded into making fun of me - I suspect I’d also have a ‘foul mouth and nasty temper’ - I could also expect to be picked apart by certain people on these TV and BGT forums because that is what seems to happen these days.
If Susan does not win because people are trying to coerce others into voting against her (would you believe by asking people to vote for other acts) to deny Susan her dream. I say again to them: Perhaps those of you baying for her blood will step back a bit and think about your campaign of hate and nastiness, but then again you will not, will you? as her losing will just vindicate your nastiness. What a terrible world we live in if someone cannot enter a talent show and do their level best on it without engendering all of this.

I am a 63 year old woman, writing from the southern US.
I am So proud of Susan Boyle. Her singing is a joy to listen to. An album by her is greatly anticipated here in the US.
Please advise her to Stop reading the press releases about herself. It is counterproductive to her goals. So, the public is fickle amd so what. There are always people who love to find fault with people in the limelight. Ask her to be calm about it, do her best in the finals and I feel sure that the tide will turn back again in her favor.
Susan is fortunate to have your support Piers.

Piers,
The moment I heard her sing and became aware of the phenomenon she was becoming, I knew that it would only be a matter of time before the press found some way to tear her down. They mocked her appearance and then criticized her when she tried to improve it. They called her daft and in the same breath manipulative and arrogant. They exploited her fame and are now trying to destroy her personally. I knew it would happen. Knew, knew, knew it. I hope she endures and shuts up all of those who hate her.

Hi,
Susan Boyle does herself no favours with her obvious inability to get the simplest of jokes and the way she mis understands everything thats being said to her probably winds some people up. She clearly lost Simon as a fan last weekend and lets face it, its Simon’s show.
She is however raw talent and whilst I dont think she will win the competition, her singing is a joy to listen to. I hope she does well.

Can you / would you help do this?
You could contact any of her fan websites or just create some kind of safe fund. This way Susan gets the money directly, she has a cushion of wealth to fall back on in case the vultures take over.

Like another person said here, I don’t know what it is about Susan’s singing, but I am moved to tears every time I hear it. If I could speak directly to Susan, I would tell her to hang in there, that there are millions of us that love her and hope she wins on Saturday, but actually she is already a winner to us. Win or lose, just be the Susan we’ve all come to love. We will always be fans. Stay true to what made you who your are.

Good for you Piers! More people should consider the fact that Susan is after all, only human, we all have bad days, we get stressed, we swear, we rant. Unlike some Susan doesn’
t appear to go on drinking an drug binges, hasn’t been violent, abusive, assaulted photographers or any of that other popular celebrity behaviour. If you ask me she has shown remarkable resoluteness and character throughout this whole thing. It seems anymore that people can take or leave a person in the spotlight, until they do something negative, or say something that people don’t sgree with then, well its all on and they get crucified for it. If I’d been Susan Boyle I would not have had the restraint to simply swear at hem and likely would have thrown a few punches so kudos to her for maintaining most of her calm.

Hi Piers - nice of you to support Susan like this. It is very disturbing this hate campaign going on right now and it needs to stop. I was shocked by the sweeping statement you made on the show regarding Shaheen though. How can you possibly say this? Even without Susan in the show, there is Greg Pritchard to think about and Shaun? It is a slur on all the good singers who have performed on that stage before you. Susan needs a lot of support now, the papers are crucifying her and youtube needs a lot to be desired. I hope the decent voters out there will realise what she has had to endure if she misses a few notes - and not just vote for those they find the most cute.

Piers,
I am glad that I checked out your site today,
Read the account of the ” supposed ” incident on the aol site. I don’t believe it and a poll of the people shows a majority of them don’t either please tell Susan that we love and support her, we know a little bit of how the papers print a story just to create a buzz and sell their rags.
Way to go Piers! you stepped up for our Susan and we love you for it. Keep up the good work, see how much she needs you? you can be her manager and protector, keeping the bad people away. While she sings her heart out and make people happy, which is all she said that she would like to do. Tell her she is making us very happy now, not only with her singing but with her delightful personality. We know it’s hard for her everyone wants to get close to her, she is such a breath of fresh air in this world. Let her know that her fans understand and when she needs some space it’s hers, just come back to us when she is ready , we will be waiting. We all need some time alone to hear ourselves think don’t we?
I do hope that you got a chance to read my comment dated 5.27.09. Please think about it.Susan has really touched my heart, I have never done this before write in to a web site like this, just know a lilittle bit about computers but I felt that I just had to say something to support Susan. I felt today like the people on the BGT show were turning their backs on her, after all that she has done for the show. She put it on the map and has continued to do so, I know I watch it due to her only, there are a few acts that are funny ‘the father & son ‘
for example. But Susan is your star!!
Please read between the lines Piers as in my previous comment, can’t say too much here, but people can be mean when they don’t get what they want instead of being gracious and letting bygones be bygones which shows a good spirit, they try to hurt others and it’s a shame to see it happen. Susan tries to be fair to others but she can’t help how she feels, she has to be true to herself and be the honest person that she is. Thankfully she is not the kind to use anyone, so some people should be grateful.I hope she can get out of any agreements that she may have made if she wants to do so. To go free and make her recordings where ever she would like to. Your defence/defense of her touched me today and I hope you will continue to do it for years to come…. excuse my spelling above that’s why I used both words.
It would be great! for you to marry your star and love and protect her for as long as you both shall live! there I said it! Label me one of the dreamers in this world, I am guilty then, so be it. You have proven that you can rise above the shallow world most celebrities live in and see true worth. So you have been rewarded with the love of a woman of substance, she’s a rich soul indeed, a rare find today, who will love you beyond your most exalted dreams.I think you will both make an excellent team.
So ‘get on with it ‘ as your Susan likes to say, Our Creator is with you both, branch out in faith together ‘remember that part of her audition’s song? I dreamed he would come to me and we will spend our lives together’ show her that her dream has come true…. that she has climbed her mountains and it was worth it!! Hope you have the marriage license in your jacket pocket as you read this, hope you read it and agree with me that your dream has come true too.
Glad that your site asks for the email also would love to get a message saying ‘We did it’ you can avoid the media if Susan agrees and just present the world with the announcement after the fact. Then bring her to the US with you so that she can face the love here from us with you by her side. That will give her the strength to face the crowds, you can keep as many at bay as you want to, so that we don’t overwhelm her too much. Love to you both…xxxx
A big fan

Piers,
BGT shpuld give Susan protection from the press. She doesn’t know how to handle the madness of the media or show business. I think BGT has a responsibility to do just that. It is all about money and ratings. And the Amercican press is as bad as the British.
I also think Susan has a crush on you Piers or maybe even in love with you. Susan has never had a female / male relationship before. The press reports of the hotel business may not be true because Susan’s group said she wasn’t in the room. But, I think Susan must have heard of the remarks you made saying Shaheen was the best you had heard in the semi finals. I have a feeling it hurt her and she was hurt. I wish you could have said you thought Shaheen was really good but not put him over Susan.
You said it yourself that Susan ran to you and planted a kiss on your lips and the wiggle that she did in front of millions of people was for you. In the beginning it was a date because you wanted to show your friendship to Susan because of people making fun of her on her first audition. But I think you meant friendship and Susan might have taken it as romantic. I think you need to be the gentleman that I think you are and handle this delicate situation with Susan in a way that doesn’t hurt her anymore than she already is.
Now, is this blog going to the press or in a file drawer? It should go to the press to support Susan. I think you Piers have a responsibility to Susan. And so does BGT and also Amanda. Amanda has a new job with CBS because of Susan.. right off SuBo’s back.. All of you owe Susan because she has brought BGT to the world to people who had never heard of it. I hope all of you do everything to protect Susan and help her deal with things that she doesn’t know how to handle. BGT owes her that. And I think Susan’s fans expect it.

Good for you for coming to her defense. A deer in the headlights says it perfectly. She is just a regular church lady with a wonderful voice who brought joy to millions. The celebrity and press must be over whelming. So like everyone to build them up only to tear them down. They are all trash>
Susan you go girl and win! That little shimmy of yours is cute - go for it. Piers you are charming, sweet and kind - who can blame any woman for having a crush on you. O know I am smitten
but…..everyone at BGT, Simon, Amanda (who is a doll) and even you are now reaping MAJOR benefits from her video - even more fame and $$$$$.
You all better do right by her and make sure she is well rewarded financially. The ratings, global attention and extra perks that BGT and you are all getting is because of a regular middle aged lady from SCotland.

Thank you Piers for coming to Susan’s rescue. I pray you don’t play with this lovely lady’s heart. She’s too fragile and naive for that, and certainly doesn’t deserve it. I’ve never really bothered about reality TV shows or the YouTube until Susan Boyle came into the picture. She’s not only gifted with an absorbing and magnetic voice, but she’s a natural who has the stamina of a true champion which she showed as she pulled through in “Memory.†I somehow surmised about the bad media release knowing how British press is known to cut people to pieces. I’m not sure how much, perhaps much worse than the tall poppy syndrome of Australia. Whether the incident transpired or not, c’mon, I’ve known of many holier-than-thou people curse when provoked. That’s why we are all human beings, imperfect. And these vultures can’t even wait until Susan’s final performance. Granting that Susan may not be the greatest singer in the world, good grief, the British people should be glowing, proud how this humble woman has touched millions of people all over the world. Many people, including you Piers, have benefited from Susan. With my heart, I pray that she fulfills her dream. Whatever happens, she has earned our deep admiration, and love. I hope that Susan doesn’t back out, instead, fight like a tigress to defend her dream and soar like an eagle, with a song in her heart. BGT should have protected her knowing her celebrity status. Susan Boyle is not just a celebrity of Britain but of the world. Please, she has suffered long enough. She’s not asking for fame, but respect, while pursuing her dream. I continuously pray that the British media will be kinder and respectfing - to please leave her alone and give peace a chance. Susan Boyle has done nothing to them, nothing, for them to treat her badly! But to millions of us, she has given much joy and abounding HOPE. Please relay to your British to let the lassie sing for millions of us who find solace and comfort in her voice and singing. Piers, tell your British Press to have a heart, and back off Susan’s nerves, please? Thank you very much.

Even if all the press says is true, I think Susan is due at least one or two public rants considering all the pressure she has been under. She is still number one in my book and don’t forget, if she has a crush on Piers, her heart is involved and we all do crazy things when the heart is involved.

I think it’s great, Piers, that you stepped up for Susan. She deserves that, since every reader of tabloits around the globe misunderstands the pressure of being famous (for just 15 minutes or for a real life-time, it doesn’t seem to matter). I think it’s good you make people realize what’s underneath the famous skins. THe only thing I don’t think you should have mentioned was her birth-trouble. I don’t know how you got the information, but I’m quite sure that no-one on the planet would like it very much if a reporter, even when standing up for him or her, would bring it forward. Susan Boyle is a good singer but I feel that Shaheen has more of a chance. If susan swore or went off on a rampage then let her do it. I think your right when you say that celebrities get a bit paranoid and loose their temper easily and I think that susan does have praise for shaheen but the tabloids do overreaact. Shaheen to win BGT 2009!!!

Top man Piers, Susan must have commercial value and just as with a young person catapulted into the media spotlight she needs protecting from them and her own naivety, surely you could advise her to get someone like Max Clifford to stand between her and the morally bankrupt gutter press and paperazzi. I am 66 years old and honestly feel that if you are unable to do that then maybe she would be better returning to the gentle world of rural scotland and people who have respect for who and what she is.

Evening Piers,
I think you make some very valid and honest points but should’nt you guys at BGT do a bit more to help/protect the lady?
She’s had her world turned upside down and inside out by the publicity that is now upon her and has never experienced anything like this in her entire life and could probably do with as much support/guidance as possible.
You guys obviously do do things to help but is it enough?
After all when all’s said and done you are benefiting from this.
Any way hope your well.
Kind regards.
Dean.

IMO, the media’s descriptions of Susan Boyle have been vicious and cruel. I don’t think I would ever open my mouth again if I was called the “Hairy Angel,” not to mention dowdy and other disparaging terms. Are these people completely heartless? Do they lack compassion? I hope she wins and all her dreams come true.

Beautifully written! I have been a Susan fan since there were 400 hits on Utube and dubbed myself,”Gaveadream,” because I am a middle-aged woman who has always wanted to sing my songs to the world! We dream that lyrics we write and the gift of musical ability will one day help the world reach a place where to live is to love. I am a teacher and understand “learning disabilities” very well. I have been astounded at Susan’s grace and her incredible voice since day one. Her challenges are many and people don’t care about that! It is as you wrote, “They start picking any little tacky thing” just to take something away from the dream we all wish we were making reality. I am so happy that she has a true gentleman and caring human being to watch over her. Keep doing it as long as you can. She needs the voices to die down so she can focus and she needs the love to know that she CAN be worthy of the title. She is a child in many ways and children need direction from a person who wants the best for them. You are Susan’s angel. I thank you from my heart for your kindness. Think about all of the children with learning disabilities who will say, “I can do that!” Susan is a true inspiration!

Oh Piers plz plz plz, stop defending, at the end of the day Susan went on for the tv show , and by doing that she left herself wide open, she knew that and still does, so she has a bad temper? so she lost her cool. so she swears, big deal, surely that means she is human… By the way I dont think she is a good singer, just average, and i feel that the only reason she got this much media attention is because of the life story that surrounds har, but based on talent she does not deserve to win.

What a pity humans can be so cruel to someone who is so uncomplex who has been blessed with a voice that conveys is capable of reaching out, touching and relating to all. It is not only the voice, but it is the feeling that swells up and out. The world is composed of all kinds of people. There are amongst us the envious who would rather destroy than enjoy. Out of this woman, if you allow yourself to listen, just listen and close your eyes (not because she is not pleasing to look upon) but so you can get the full impact of her gift. Allow yourself to feel without your eyes what this woman’s voice is capable of conveying. Her interpretation is unbelievable. She can touch your inner emotions to the max. Yes, they criticized the shaky start in Memory, but listen and feel the emotion that swells and tugs at your heart when she sings “Touch me ……………” To you poor, pathetic people out there that must feel it your duty to destroy this simple, yet powerful voice housed in this simple common woman, I feel sorry for you, all of you. You are not satisfied to see her down, to step on her, you further want to fully finish the job and destroy her dream. A young boy of 12 may have no voice when reaches man-hood. But if he does, there will always be other oportunities. But, Susan is 47 and should not be deprived of her short day in the sun. Destroy her because she behaved as we all do when stressed to the max. Destroy her because she acted human and blew it. Remember, one may trample on a beautiful rose until it is unrecognizable, but its scent will perservere and rise becoming even more pungent and beautiful.
Jo-Ann Sylvia, Manchester, CT, USA (I am a 65 year old Mezzo-soprano who was told I had the god-given gift, but would stand a chance if I didn’t have an “over bite.”) Tito Gobbi once told me that to be a singer one must firstly have a very thick skin, an inner strength and then the god-given talent. Susan must not give up. She has the last of the required triad and must work on the other 2 requirements which I failed to achieve. She must not give in, not now!

Yesterday I was a bit miffed at you. Today I am not. I am so hoping this is all just a publicity ploy to pump up the ratings. It is almost like they are trying to get us back to our very first original opinion of Susan. The one everyone had before she knocked our socks off and blew us away with that voice.
So she comes out on Saturday night and we are expecting a woman falling apart, one we might get to see have a crack up on national TV and BINGO, she does it all over again when she delivers a perfect rendition of whatever she will sing.
To believe all this publicity one would also have to believe there is no control there at BGT. That seems unlikely. We have to believe that Simon is allowing this person who can take him so many places and earn him so much money to be driven to the point of breakdown. I’m not buying it and I hope to God I am right. But, even so, you have all made me nervous about the whole thing.

Dear Piers
I am so pleased that you have defended Susan in the media - I was starting to lose faith with both yourself and your fellow BGT colleagues.
Personally, I have a huge amount of empathy with Susan, as I was born with a disability - being severely deaf in both ears. As Fate would have it, music and music management was the only thing I ever wanted to do with my life. When people think you are stupid because of “strange” things you do or say due to your deafness, or dismiss your dreams as crazy, it is all too easy to give up or feel “worthless”. Fortunately I had parents and colleagues who supported me as I followed my star, Susan, has perhaps not been so lucky up to now in her life…
When I watch Susan, it is obvious that music and performing is her unique way of communicating and reaching out to the world and by goodness, she has certainly done that! Now she is so near to achieving her ambition and dreams, no wonder she is feeling pressure and we musicians are a sensitive bunch anyway. I know I’d probably do far worse than just give a V sign and a few chosen words if a Daily Mail reporter hassled me at this time!
The vicious, savage and uncaring reaction of the press has shocked me. Your comments were much needed and hopefully might calm down the situation. My heart goes out to Susan and I sincerely hope that the people she trusts will look after her and her interests, whatever happens in the Final. Piers, she obviously feels something of a bond to you, so I do hope that you’ll continue to provide moral support and friendship to her even after the spotlights fade at the end of the Final…
I shall be crossing my fingers for Susan and thanks again Piers for squaring up to the inimitable British Press: “Build them up, then shoot ‘em down…”

It’s so easy to condemn and judge others in our faceless society. Thank you very much Piers for publishing this on behalf of Susan. I feel so very sorry for her and what she has to go through.
She has a beautiful voice and do you know what I love about her most? She has the most beautiful smile that I have ever seen when she is singing.
She is an inspiration for us all and I have to watch her Video a few times aday, because I teach German children English and have chosen her video and her life for my lessons. I am teaching the children “Don’t judge a book by its cover” and the kids love it, but they are also amazed when Susan sings. Now these are just teenagers!
On the other hand I think Susan has a real charm and that really is her smile and her voice.
Susan, if you are reading this, please, please don’t be upset any more about all the people who are being nasty. I, too, would be really upset just like you, but don’t feed the wolves!!! Show them just what you can do and you know what? You are just the right person to show them this!
Piers knows what he is talking about and, although I don’t know him, because I live in Germany, he seems to be a great guy to have in the background. He is a bit like my best friend!
I wish you, Susan all the very, very best and will buy your first CD as soon as it comes out - and you know why? Because your voice and the smile that goes with it is something really special!
Thank you Piers for writing this blog for Susan! You really are a great guy!
Take care both of you,

Hallelujah! The voice of reason, common sense, and above all compassion. Kudos to your Mr. Morgan. I live in Arizona and I am on pins and needles about the final on Saturday. You are championing someone that every one of us can relate to - if we are honest. Susan is a joy. I posted her two performances on my Facebook for everyone I know to view. I said, “It is a must!” and “This is what discovering talent is all about.” Like Paul Potts, a Welshman doing an ordinary job and keeping to himself a most extraordinary voice. I love it. I love Susan although I’ve never met her. Why? Because she is sweet innocence living in a small village in Soctland. (I grew up and was educated in a small village in the English Lake District. I know how isolating that can be and certainly doesn’t prepare anyone for world limelight). Go Susan. Be of good cheer. The Lord has given you a voice so beautiful. Set it on the mountain top. He will uphold you. And thank you Piers for taking care of her.

Dear Pierce:
Excellent commentary re Susan Boyle. Excellent.
I don’t understand why so many people are so hateful, so bitter, so unreasonable. Some of them like to disrupt web sites, degrade people etc. They have made it difficult to check out her most recent performance.
Pierce: I would like for her to sing: Climb Every Mountain…and The Sound of Music: The hills are alive with the sound of music….etc.
Also..I would love for her to sing a duet with that very outstanding opera performer. I’ll bet that they would get a thunderous applause for that.
I live close to Dallas, Texas. I would love to see the finals over there, but I don’t think that they will be broadcast in the U.S. If I am wrong, please advise.

Susan dreamed a dream, her dream. The lyrics of the song end with, “life destroyed the dream I dreamed.” No Susan. Absolutely not. They are just words. Beautiful words, but not so. If you can dream a dream, you have the inner strength and wherewithal to make it come true. A philosopher said, “Hope is a dream waking.” So come on Susan. Your day is here. Your dream is unfolding. Ignore the media! They are iconoclasts, they create and destroy, it’s what they are. You are your voice. No one outside yourself created it. No one can destroy. Do not be downhearted. If you win, you win. If you don’t “win” the title of best talent, guess what? You are the best talent. People the world over are rejoicing at Susan Boyle, from a tiny village in Scotland, who sang along with Pebbles, a yet-to-be-discovered-talent, who suddenly came out of obscurity. You are a joy. You are a gem. Just go with it and enjoy it. Please do not shed tears of those people and things who do not warrant your respect much less your tears. Piers is in your corner. A true gentleman, God bless him - and you - and your performance on Saturday. Love xxxxx Audrey.

Piers, thank you for this posting. I agree with you on most points, and would simply like to reiterate that while Susan is neither innocent nor worldly, she does have an aura of naivete that makes some of us want to protect her against the nasties that prey on those who are unable to defend themselves.
I look at some of the paparazzi, reporters and interviewers as vampires, wanting to suck the life out of people who can’t protect themselves. Susan entered the world’s notice on April 11, and it has been an incredible six weeks for her. While I believe she might have had a brief inking of how things were going to go down, she could never have envisioned the reality of her influence.
We’ve seen how the paparazzi have ruined the lives of many people all over the world, and how some print publications have to always find the worst possible news, so it’s not surprising to see them going after Susan at this time. She’s dealing with enough negativity in her life already, and if people cared about her–not as a singer, but as a fellow human-being who has had little luck in her life–they would ignore all these horrible publications completely, and try to focus on the potential good things which can be seen in Susan’s life from today and forward.
I wish her so much luck in her future, and just am happy to have been able to see the influence she has had on everyone.

I don’t know whether it’s even worth me writing this as almost 180 people here have said it already but thank you Piers. I am glad and enormously relieved to read what you wrote. Somebody had to say it and there are not many people who would have such a strong impact. I hope Susan is comforted…
I don’t think she needs the world embracing her, personally… I know I wouldn’t like it. Ideally, I would like just to be understood and admired by a small audience and those that matter to me…and those that matter to society, like the Queen or yourself. I think it might be the same for Susan…maybe. Although I don’t know her and, as I am a complete and utter nobody in this swarm of humanity, I don’t deserve to know her either. I don’t want to take anything from her. Why can’t people just give her some space?
I feel quite uncomfortable about her global status…as it means it is harder just to ignore or even laugh away bad press or false accusations. It’s like eating too many sweets (or ferrero roches if you prefer) and getting a bit sick…like everyone does…but having it plastered all over the world that you are a fat pig. If it was just in a local paper, say, it might actually be quite funny. It is obviously twisting the truth and one would expect most people not to take is as gospel and just think it was cool you made the front page! But when it’s all over the world, with so many different minds browsing it and judging it…….hmm
But anyway, agreed, she needs some space and people, even adoring fans, need to calm down.
I really want to enjoy the rest of the competition and I miss the modest appeal it usually has.
I don’t think you’ve ever said anything ‘wrong’, Piers (nor ‘right’ for that matter but I don’t really believe in judging others in that sense). I would hate to imagine a situation where next year the judges have everything scripted so that they don’t say something risky or offensive!! I love the way Simon has really lightened up this series and isn’t so predictable. I love the way Amanda speaks before she thinks and the way you are completely unbiased and open minded. I agree with you that Shaheen JG DID give the best singing performance of the semis so far. I was VERY impressed.
Having said all that, this Susan thing has given me a lot to think about, and if that helps me grow as a person I am, selfishly, very grateful.
But I do hope things get more sensible for her.
All the best and sorry for writing so much again. You inspire me to have an opinion Piers.

Dear Piers,
I’m just trying to understand this. You say that you are so supportive of Susan and yet you wrote an article stating that Susan Boyle will NOT win BGT. Even Simon Cowell would not be that cruel.
You also told Shaheen that his singing was the BEST you had heard in the semi-finals–knowing how that would surely hurt Susan. Let’s face it–you could have phrased that comment some other way without saying -the best!! It’s as if you wanted to deliberately goad her.
Next, you said you would pay money if the Stavros won and got to perform for the Queen! They are cute, but talented??? What a joke.
I am just speaking for myself when I say that it appears you have pretended to like Susan just to jump in the lime light with her. Personally, I hope she doesn’t go out on a date with you because I think she deserves better.
And finally, on a TV interview after the semi-finals, you referred to her as “an old lady”, while you yourself are only four years younger. How would you like to be called an old man?
My last comment was not posted, which is why I am writing again, and I do hope you read this; however, I suspect this one won’t be put on your sight either.

Ruth from Missouri — made a couple of comments that in fairness I have to agree with. Ruth you could have pressed the wrong button before, but your comment, to me, is relevant. First with regard to the best and all that … frankly, I don’t think it fair of a judge to make any statement in that regard to any contestant, however talented. With retard to Shaheen, it could have been his night. On the final night? Who knows. However, I did bristle when I read that Piers had, unfortunately in my view, addressed him as being the best singer yet on BGT. I would have reacted with dismay, had I been Susan. It seemed a bit like off with the old and on with the new. Not much less like the media, iconcoclasts all, who create an icon, then destroy it, almost overnight. What power there is in that! Second only to God’s. So for a judge, albeit admiring of Susan’s incredible hidden talen, to make a distinction there, is sad and very hurtful. When you say someone is the best ever on the show, excuse me but that is very loud and clear. It eliminates everyone else in one fell swoop. While I like the way Piers has come to Susan’s defence, the fact is that a judge should remain impartial. We have seen the results of failure to observe that position in American Idol. Adam Lambert was uniformly viewed as the winner - long before the votes were in, and Simon Cowell was largely responsible for that. A judge! If you are going to judge, the responsibility is on your head to be fair. Therefore, bite your tongue if you have to, but avoid the words “you are the best yet.” Yet is still to come. As for Stavros Flately… I have to say I found this performance so entertaining and delightful. Demetrio and Liga have the right to a chance, so I think it premature for anyone to describe them as “no talent,” so I disagree with Ruth from Missouri on that. It is all a matter of personal choice (as with music and art and everything else). But when an act has got through to the final, then we should all shut up and wait to see how people vote. We may be amazed. Good luck to Susan, and to the Stavros duo, to Shaheen, and everyone else. I hope the final makes the day of each one. No one on BGT is the best ever until voters have their say on that. It is up to the voters, not the judges. And in the meantime, we should all refrain from judging, but voice our support as we have the right to do.

Ruth from Missouri, I am wondering whether it is kinder to Susan to say she won’t win? I’m sure Piers didn’t mean it with such stone cold certainty as he also said he didn’t know who would win at that point. I think perhaps he was worried if Susan was told she was expected to win it would put unecessary pressure on her? Also, she is silently competitive and, from her audition, has somewhat of a talent for proving people wrong! Maybe it drives her? So, although I don’t think Piers particularly crafted what he said, it may have actually stirred a bit of ambition in Susan. She says herself she loves a challenge, and Piers made the competition a challenge for her to love.
I hope that maybe makes it easier to understand? Although I by no means speak on behalf of Piers.

Another thing, I have heard some people say that they should LET the boy win because he’s a kid and deserves a CHANCE! (Sorry, I can’t remember his name)
(Jeani)
Well, he HAS a GREAT start from being on BGT, he will still go far, but, he is NOT as good as Susan, AND Susan is not a child, she is pushing 50, she has had a hard life and is poor and facing old age - unemployed and alone, with a cat!!! And with one of the greatest voices ever, SHE ALSO DESERVES A CHANCE and she also NEEDS IT!
The boy has his parents to care for him and thanks to BGT he WILL succeed.
But Susan, doesn’t have a whole life time ahead of her like the boy does, she NEEDS something NOW!
NO WOMAN would want to be in her shoes when she is pushing 50. Thank GOD that He blessed her with the voice of a Angel, and she deserves to have a better life for how ever long she has left. She is BETTER than the boy, and the boy has a long life ahead, he can even come back another year.
There will NEVER be another Susan Boyle! I love her better than all of them put together!

I think we should all chill out, really. Just because the mass media decides to do what it does best - go for broke on something, doesn’t mean we should all break our hearts and chew on our nails because of what they come up with. Everyone of the contestants has his/her fans, and fans want their favorite to win. In my view, when all the votes are in, the favorite may be theres but not mine. So it is with Susan Boyle. Her style of singing, her voice, and especially her phrasing in music, are all just my cup of tea. I would love to see her chosen to sing before the Queen, because that will totally fulfill her dreams. But all these contestants have their dreams so who am I to say which is real talent and which isn’t? Go for Susan, but let’s all give the others a fair do. As for the comment about talent coming from large countries - and the UK is small, please, give us all a break! Talent has no country, no nationality, no race. Thank God. It speaks in many languages. It comes out of nowhere. And yes, out of Blackburn, Scotland. But also out of Wales - Paul Potts. Then again, Kris Allen of Arkensas is no slouch, and neither is Adam Lambert, who did not win but oh what a voice he has that will go far. Votes really don’t mean anything. Piers talking about “best ever” doesn’t mean a thing. Because in the final analysis … Susan will go far with that voice. It is like a genie has been freed from a bottle. Nothing will contain it. As is true with Paul Potts, and will be with Adam Lambert. They had their chance to be hear worldwide. That is wonderful. It should also be evident that talent is everywhere, worldwide. Anyone who saw Oprah’s show World Talent - which Simon Cowell was on, and on which a clip of Susan was shown, will recognize that talent has no special name written on it. As for me, I would like to see the talent of Susan Boyle selected to sing at the Royal Variety Show - and for her sake as well as my pleasure. Don’t mean to preach, but really no country has the corner of the market on talent. Scotland is blessed with Susan Boyle’s.

Enigma says
Dear Piers:
Thank you very much for your defence of Susan Boyle. Like so many others worldwide, I’m a big fan of Susan Boyle’s, and I’ve been closely following news about Susan ever since her audition. Given the enormous media pressure she’s experienced—not of her choosing and completely beyond her control—I think she’s done admirably well for herself. As for the likes of Lily Allen, a virtual nobody by comparison outside of the U.K., I can only wonder what she intended to gain from claiming that Susan is “overrated.†If she’s using Susan Boyle’s fame as a vehicle to promote herself, then I think her plans have backfired very badly and she will never achieve a fraction of the success she may want in the U.S. or elsewhere. In contrast, Susan is going to be a superstar with a loyal and appreciative fan base worldwide, simply because she has TALENT!
Irrespective of how she looks, her on-stage personality, and her quirky (but charming) mannerisms, at her core Susan Boyle comes across as a very decent human being whose pitch-perfect singing talent can touch people in ways that move millions of people—both male and female—literally to tears, from all ethnic backgrounds and walks of life. To her detractors who think she’s less talented than some of the others on BGT, it makes no sense to compare her with Flawless or Diversity, for example, because that is like comparing apples with oranges. Nor does it seem appropriate to compare her with Shaheen, Shaun, Hollie, or any of the other singers in competition. Rather, it seems more sensible to ask how she compares with the very best professional singers in the world in that musical genre and apply that same standard to the other performers. If we were to consciously apply that type of test of her talent, then the strong endorsements she received from Patti LuPone and Elaine Paige are proof positive that Susan Boyle deserves to win BGT. Furthermore, the fact that she can sing “Cry Me a River†or “My Heart will Go Onâ€â€”quite different styles of music—incredibly well shows her versatility and depths of talent. It would be like asking Flawless or Diversity to dance a ballet routine and do it as well as the best dancers in the Bolshoi Ballet. When put in this context, negative comments about Susan Boyle from the likes of Lily Allen are worth nothing!
As for those small-minded (and talentless) people who think nothing about “winding her up†to upset her, or for the yellow journalists who prey upon Susan’s vulnerabilities to sell newspapers, there is only one word to describe them: COWARDS! By their nature, cowards are selfish bottom feeders with no respect for themselves—let alone anyone else—who do not deserve the time of day from anyone who conduct themselves with decency and appreciation for others besides themselves. Susan Boyle represents our better selves—unlike the Lily Allen’s of this world—and I hope for the very best of success for her performance on the BGT final and beyond.

I was awe struck by Susan Boyle’s voice in the auditions. Actually, it seems like her whole countenance just changed before my eyes when she began to sing! I was not moved to tears, but to seeing her as someone who could belt ‘em out and look good doing it. There is a certain attractiveness about her. But now the vultures have descended to harass her…ain’t it always that way? Nervousness? Well, yeah…in the auditions she had nothing to lose, and now that she has attained this world wide stardom and risen through the ranks of BGT to the finals, her new life hangs on the upcoming performance. If I could say one thing to Susan, it would be: “Susan, sing for your maker that gave you that awesome set of pipes…forget the people…some can be pretty fickle.”

In reading the comments in this blog about Susan and how this is effecting her, I am reminded of an individual I grew up with and how that person just kept winning the local, to the regional, perhaps the state and then a national contest. We are natives of a town that generally has a population of around 2,000, so for that person to make it to the top and come home a winner was wonder. Thank goodness, in those days we did not have the tabloids and the times were different than they are now. The individual, used the winning to pursue a university degree, was a very good ambassador of their chosen university. From there, it was on to bigger and better things. But I really am reminded of how much things have changed since that American singer won a national contest some years ago. But there is also a quote on that individual’s website, that really does sum up how one might feel in such pressure. The individual had audition for a musical in London on a day when they were flying to the states, sometime later, a very early call came and the individual had been chosen for the role. That lead to more and more things; including honoring a request from your Queen Mum to sing a specific song. there is a statement on that individual’s website about standing in the wings and having this thought “Oh, my goodness! there are more people in this audience than in my home town!” At which someone said “you’re on, kid!”
But I have to wonder, if with all of what sounds as if there is some ugliness that is surrounding Susan, if the person I know would have been able to keep fighting. Because the individual is a person whom mamy in your country know better than we do at home. And I would like to think that Susan would be treated in such a kinder manner by her OWN country men, as they have treated an American.
You GO SUSAN!!! we LOVE YOU IN THE STATES!!!
AND THOSE TABLOIDS WILL FILL THEIR PAGES WITH HALF TRUTHS, FABRICATIONS — IGNORE THEM!!
I STILL DO NOT REALLY UNDERSTAND WHY ANY OF US MAY READ THOSE PAPERS, TABLOIDS, WHATEVER — PERHAPS IT IS JEALOUSY, OR, WE HAVE TO PRODUCE ANY RUMOR WE HEAR TO CONTINUE TO EARN MONEY THE WAY WE HAVE CHOSEN TO DO, BUT I FIND IT RATHER NASTY AND SO UNBRITISH BEHAVIOR — OR PERHAPS THAT’S MY PRESPECTIVE FROM HERE.

Piers … not to do this to death and not wishing to make a habit of the comments - although this blog in defence of Susan Boyle and the comments it elicited have really got me thinking - I have to comment once again …
Piers, Oi! I have watched the YouTube of BGT and Shaheen’s performance as well as Susan’s of course. I live in Arizona so do not have the great pleasure of being at the BGT. I quote your opinion of Shaheen’s performance verbatim: “I think pound for pound that was the best singing performance we’ve heard in the semi-finals so far.” Your opinion may well be so and sincere, but in my view your words were unfortunate. Your reaction to Susan’s audition was in a different category. It was and overwhelming and delightful surprise for everyone, and your reaction was right on and yhour praise not exclusive - I liked your response to Stavros Flately. But “the best” means one thing only: better than all the rest. That excludes all the rest - as best. Hmm. Susan was in the semi-finals. No matter whether the tabloid nonsense is accurate or not, had I been Susan, I would have been deflated. I would have taken that comment personally. Rightly or wrongly. It would have sent me a message that I had been supplanted in your OPINION. Right? Which brings me to the baying about Susan having a crush on you. Why not I ask? If I were younger, I would. She’s never met up with someone like you before, never received attention. She reacted normally. She didn’t need to have it plastered all over the newspapers. And speaking of newspapers, you are from Fleet Street. You well know that people who write for newspapers seize on a phenomenon and let it go just as rapidly. They start criticizing you said. This puts me in mind of Cristiano Ronaldo. The darling of the press. Now the press is talking about him meeting his match in Lionel Messi (a brilliant footballer by anyone’s standards). And Ronaldo holds the crown for World’s Best Soccer Player, so the press think he is fair game. As they do of Susan Boyle. It is a sad but true fact and you know it. Once you are on a pedestal, someone has to “prove” that you have clay feet. Susan does not. Neither does Ronaldo. My sympathy goes out to both. It is hard to be in the hot seat. I don’t expect your defence of Susan to change the mindset of your brethren on Fleet Street, but you had your say and I applaud you for it. I only wish you could come up with something as supportive for Cristiano Ronaldo. He doesn’t deserve the brickbats any more than Susan does, and it makes no difference that he is used to the limelight. I don’t know why detractors are said to bay like wolves because wolves are beautiful animals, very intelligent. Which is more than one can say of most who hail from Fleet Street. So here’s to Susan, your defence of her, and to all the worthy contestants in the finals.

Piers, thank you for speaking up for a woman who seems to have difficulty finding the words to do it for herself. I have watched several interviews with Susan, and I have noticed that she seems to have a problem vocalizing her thoughts and feelings. She manages it, but you can tell she is overwhelmed by it all, and sometimes I get the feeling that she isn’t sure how to appropriately respond to all this attention. I have a child with a “social disorder”, and I know how difficult it can be for people with these difficulties to relate in the best of circumstances. Britain…..give the woman a break, she’s following a dream, she didn’t ask the world to get all bent out of shape. She simply wants to do what she loves and what she is good at. We make excuses for the bad behaviors of other so called “celebrities” all the time. Might I add there are many acts out there who have “made it big” and are famous who have less than half the talent she has in her baby finger. They behave far worse morally than Susan could ever imagine acting. No one runs around saying they should have their recording contracts pulled or whatever.
For those of you out there who say that Susan is an “OK” singer, listen to her rendition of “Cry me a river”…it’s on Youtube. I listen to her sing and her appearance melts away and what manifests itself in its place is true beauty. I heard her sing the song from Titanic on Larry King Live in the interview with you and I again cried. I am NOT by any means a music critic or producer, but I do know what I like, and I appreciate anyone who can evoke genuine feelings with their performance. Susan Boyle does that. Good luck to her, I will be waiting for her first cd release, and will absolutely be buying it. (I rarely purchase music cd’s anymore, since there are so few artists that I truly appreciate listening to for 45-60 min in a row.)
Much love and well wishes from Canada <3

Hello Piers,
Way to go for defending a poor soul who is extremely overwhelmed and with all the pressure with her international fame. You are genuinely a great gentlemen for standing up for her like that. Honestly speaking, I’ve never heard of Britain Got Talent until Ms. Susan took over the globe, and that’s pretty amazing I must say. I came from a very small country sits in the middle of the South Pacific and has never heard of the show before but since Ms. Susan gave out with her astonishing voice, people back home talked about Susan like a well known queen. She exposed BGT internationally and look at the shows rating????? Sky rocketed and beyond unimaginable measures. Most importantly, Susan has touched so many lives with singing, and gave hope for those who were on the verge of giving up. Thank you for voicing you concern over this poor soul who is obviously new to all the attention and fame and for being an advisor to her as well in some ways. God as surely send her a guardian angel and that is you. May God Bless you Piers!

Please tell Susan not to quit. No ONE is or will be disappointed in her regardless how she does under all the pressure. The world already loves her and can’t wait for her debut CD.
Also, TOO, if she quits it will cause world-wide riots and spike the prescriptions of antidepressants.

Thank you Piers for standing up for Susan. I live in the U.S. and can’t support her in any way so far as voting and am in agony over what I’ve been reading in the papers the last few days. I had lost all interest in music until I heard her sing. Now I love music again — especially when she sings. She makes me happy. To see her have to go through the jeering and ridicule again almost makes me cry. No one should have to pay that price to achieve their dream. She needs someone to help her cope with the pressures because I don’t think she realizes what a super-hero she has become. I understand some of her family is there with her, but certainly they wouldn’t understand what she’s going through either. Someone has to calm this kind woman down and get her pointed in the right direction again. Judge or no judge, maybe you could help. You know the territory, they certainly don’t. Please continue to help her if you can. She has millions of devoted fans in the U.S. who are pulling for her every inch of the way.

Thank you Piers for supporting Susan. I have been defending Susan on You Tube along with all her other fans. Most of the bad mouthed comments about Susan are from stupid children or people who are seeking attention and we her fans have let them know how pathetic they are. As for the news reports about Susan, we Brits are good at putting people on a pedestal and then knocking them off. Who loses in the end, We Do! Will we ever learn! Piers, please do not toy with Susan’s emotions just to get publicity.

Thank you so much, Piers, for being a steadying, compassionate voice for this sweet, gentle, and very vulnerable lady. I keep wanting to tell Susan to see this wretched week as interpreted by a line in her first song, “I Dreamed a Dream”: “For the tigers come at night, with their voices soft as thunder, as they tear your hope apart and they turn your dream to shame.” There are those in the media and in life who want to tear her dreams apart and to turn her life to shame. We cannot let that happen to her. It would be a tragic end to a powerful story of hope. I have been a Presbyterian minister for almost 30 years and have seldom witnessed anything close to the inspiration of “realized hope” that she has provided us. If I had not been a bit too timid, I wanted to send her a small devotional one month ago to help her though this time. I am very angry with myself for not reaching out. If there is a way to do so, please let me know.
Again, Piers, thank you for your strength and grace for Susan.

Dear Piers
First can I say how wonderful you are? What an articulate and lovely person, and how well you reinvented yourself.
Which brings me to Susan Boyle. I am a musician myself, having played piano for musicals in the West End, in Hollywood and on Broadway.
I think her troubles started from the moment she had the makeover. Being of a certain age myself, I have every sympathy. But she shouldn’t have done it.
Her combination of talent-with-ordinariness-and-vulnerability was the winning factor in her astonishing success.
And what did she do? Change the hair, the eyebrows, the lips, all the things that made her look like everyone’s charlady-type-mum.
What a mistake! Killed the goose that laid the golden egg. Susan is the greatest living example of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” She is no longer what it said on the tin.
Because she is rudderless, having swept away her worldbeating image - that’s where all the trouble is coming from.
This also confused the public, who have subsequently taken against her.
Vanity, vanity - all is vanity! Susan Boyle, please return to the comfortable, cuddly, charming and brilliant person you were. Throw away the lipgloss and leather jacket and rejoice in your own skin.
Thanks.

Piers, I echo the remarks of others; applauding your comments about Susan, asking that we show some restraint and give her breathing space. I am a member of one of the Susan Boyle fansites on Face book and, quite frankly, I have been completely gobsmacked by some of the nasty, vitriolic tirades against her. I wish her all the best for the final. Even if she does not win, I hope that she appreciates what a positive role model she is for others. She has broken the traditional stereotype of what a middle aged person should be doing at “their stage of lifeâ€. She had the tenacity to put aside any doubts she had about her ability and went for it. When you consider she had learning difficulties and, for the most part, life has not dealt her a great hand, she has done a remarkable job to turn her life around. The day I watched Susan for the first time on utube I was feeling pretty low. By the end of the performance I was on my feet applauding with everybody else. She was a reality check for me – if Susan can live her dream anybody can.

Most of the world fell in love with Susan Boyle the first time she ever sang on BGT. Most of us still think she is the best thing to have happened to us in a long while. Now a few of her “tigers” are attempting to destroy our belief in this symbol of hope and we mustn’t let this happen. Piers, thank you for supporting Susan and I pray that you will be able to afford her some sort of protection from the mobs. I believe that Susan will be happy no matter who wins BGT. She must know that she has already won the biggest prize of all - the admiration and love of millions of people world-wide. Personally I don’t believe all the garbage that’s being written, but no matter what, Susan, WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU for the gift you have given us. Best wishes for Saturday!

You’ve risen up to fit your boots, young man…congratulations on words well written, a friendship worth defending, an honor worth remembering, and a kindness worth expressing….Susan Boyle’s innocence rings like bells…she is pristine in her individualness, untouched by drama, tv, gossip, slander…therein lies her beauty…I will never forget her words, “I want to be a professional singer.” Spoken so plainly and earnestly and endearingly. She is endearing, and simple…and in that simpleness lies her extraordinary magnetic pull…She’s everyone, everywhere, who ever tried, who ever cared, she’s all of us, what we could have been, if we’d discovered our talent within…she shines like a light, so bright and clear, pure and white, strong yet dear…THIS is some woman and she deserves protection, love, sheltering, kindness, patience, and tolerance….I don’t expect another Susan Boyle to come along in any of our lifetimes…she’s the first and last! She makes my soul sing in symphony with her!

Stand by her, man. I think that’s the best and more dignified thing you can do right now.
The producers should have taken her to somewhere isolated where she could not be bottered. Susan’s situation was particular, she should be safe somewhere in the countryside and go to the city just to sing - until the final.
Shame on Britain’s people if they’re trying to bring their best ambassador down!

Hi, I love love BGT; my children and I expect the videos to appear in youtube, this year it seems to me that there is too much talent and too much pressure for every contestant, but worse for a person like Susan, I love her voice, but i like the voices of Shaun Smith and Shaheen, too. I expect to hear about them in the future even though they don´t win.
I hope someone supports Susan in this moment and helps her with the pressure, because I want her to show her amaizing voice in the final.

We all know what the tabloids do and why they do it!

Answer to another fan’s news that BGT had finally decided to address a situation that was a detriment to Susan’s welfare.
I saw it, It’s about time they came out and acted like the were in control there. It sounds like a runaway train there.
They should be ashamed of themselves for not having staved off the story at the onset. They have probably benefitted from all the media frenzy, at the expense of a person that has trusted them and naively thought they had her best interest at heart.
Win or not, I just want her to get out there and do her best. That she goes out with dignity. which is something they’ve tried to strip her of. I just wish her mom was here to take the pain away.
All I can do is pray that on Saturday the old Susan, which may never come back, sings with all her heart. That’s all anyone can expect her to do. I’d hate to see her have to quit and not see her dream to the end.
Still her #1 FAN!!! Come hell or high water.

Piers, thank you for putting things in perspective.
It’s always easy to criticize other people - especially when you have never stood in their shoes.
Too many people take for granted, what the media reports. The media also take things out of context.
I just watched ET and Access Hollywood where they both took a couple of lines you quoted and went with those to make it “fit” their story on Susan.
Susan, wha’s like us? Damn few and they’re a’ deid!! You are a feisty Scot and you’ll see this through!!

She might’ve entered this show willingly, but she never dreamt it would get this far and her dream is becoming a nightmare.

Thank you, Piers. You seem to be a genuinely empathic, kind man. I think that Susan is a lovely woman, and definitely doesn’t deserve the kind of rebound that has suddenly come at her. It is such a sad commentary on people that the charm, goodness, and talent of someone who has been thrust in the limelight makes people search for an ugly side, a scheme, a trick, a conspiracy. I’ve fallen in love with Susan, and, really, with the whole BGT crew who were able to put away your own initial incredulity and look at what was actually there. I can tell you why Susan is so popular with women in the USA and all over the world for the following reasons:
1. At 48, most of her life has been spent caring for
others in her family and community, much like
women all over the globe, and in doing so, her own
aspirations and goals were secondary to loving and
caring for them. A reflection of her selfless
and caring nature. Women can relate to this.
2. She looks ordinary, not like a model or star,
in fact, she looks like a lot of women who are
hardworking and caregivers to families. We relate to her.
3. Her voice is full of emotion and feeling, what
we call “soul”. We can feel that she means
what she says in a song. In that way, she
expresses the desire for hope, love and joy, but sadly, it comes through that there has never
been enough of any of it in her life. Again, much like most of us who have yearned for the story book never ending love, and the life that
was lived in fulfillment of every dream and goal.
4. She is a small town girl who is vulnerable, much like most of us anywhere. This vulnerability is attractive because culture teaches us to look and act STRONG, even when we do not feel that way.
Piers, Susan is representative of most women everywhere. When she sings, we can feel the emotion all the way into our bones. She has a gift that can touch anyone who is open to the true spirit of love, compassion and empathy. That is why Susan is loved by so many. She touches are very hearts and souls.
Thank you, Piers, for trying to protect Susan. She is a treasure, a one of a kind, and thanks be to God for giving her to us when we need the touch of humanity that she gives us through her beautiful, emotional voice.

This whole incident makes me feel sad, help her, protect her and I will be prayering for her. I am more concern about her well-being rather than singing right now. Please Piers help her through. Am sure Amanda got a job in the USA because of Susan, I know about all the judges and the show because of Susan: an not a Telly/TV person and am more interested now about buying Susan’s album. My best regards to her, SHE GAVE US A SONG THAT WILL CHEER US UP FOR YEARS TO COME, SHE GAVE US A SONG OF HOPE. AGAIN TAKE CARE OF HER, PLEASE DO AND THANKS

Well said, Piers! I am so happy that you are in her corner. The poor woman is being scrutinized and just doesn’t deserve this. I wish people would just leave her alone and give her the space she needs, right now, so she can concentrate on her next performance. All Susan’s fans here in the States adore her and pray that she will do well in the finals. I believe, if she can keep herself focused, she will give the performance of a lifetime. She will always be a winner in my eyes, no matter the outcome.

I sat down and spend two hrs read all comments here. I was reduced to tears several times as many of those comments are very touching. I hope someone can print out them and give Susan to read, she will feel much better. I also hope more Britan people see this website and see how Susan is loved by the whole world. They should proud of having Susan represent Britan so wonderfully, give her a vote on Saturday. Let her dream come true.

I posted my comment in the “Contact” section. Duh! At any rate, Piers, I add my “yes and you’re wonderful” for defending Susan. I’ve read everything about the incident, include her village saying she is “legendary” for her temper, and I suspect that it’s true. I also read her family and working class village pretty much all talk like that. SO WHAT? She still has a beautiful voice that the rest of the world wants to hear, and we love her personality. I hope you and the other judges, since you seem close to her, will perhaps steer her in the direction of some counseling. From my background, that kind of explosive anger comes out of unresolved inner pain, and she’s had her share of that! Tell her we love her no matter what, and we’re hoping she will sing in the final and WIN, but whether or not she wins, we want to see her recording career start soon. Tell her to imagine the audience in their underwear and she won’t get so uptight. She’ll laugh!!! We love you, Piers, and Susan and Simon and Amanda.

Hello, Piers,
Thank you for doing what a gentleman should do.
At this point, it has nothing to do with who is or isn’t a judge, or who the contestants are. It has gone way beyond that, so I appreciate that you have come to Susan’s defense.
I have confidence that Susan will come up with her own personal “navigation instruments” for this nonsense with a little time.
Please tell her there are so many people who are behind her!
God bless you, Piers. Give Susan my love and best wishes. USAheartland.

Mr. Piers:
Thanks for speaking up for Susan. I have watched her two preformaces over and over again. Her beautiful singing and smile just does something to my inner being. She is a winner whether she wins Saturday or not. She has changed the world about people who are ordinary but have extraordinary character and talent. I think Susan is an example to the whole world. For someone who is not considered a professional singer she has a tremendous voice and I love her voice and songs. I looked up Elaine Paige on Yahoo, and listened to Ms. Paige sing “I dreamed a dream” and Susan’s permorance is much better than Ms. Paige. Ms. Paige seemed to be talking parts of the song, but Susan sings though all parts of the song. To me, I perfer Susan. I’m not saying Ms. Paige is not an excellent singer but she is a professional. I ask the pople who are writing and reading this blog to do as I did and compare the two singing “I dreamed a dream.”
I love Susan Boyle. I hope she wins Saturday, but if she doesn’t she is still a winner to me. She has inspired me and lifted up my spirits in the beautiful songs she has preformed on BGT.

Thank you Piers for being both a voice of reason and a kind voice that reminds all of us that Susan Boyle is a human being, frail in my ways, despite her beautiful gift. When I hear her sing it is, for me, an affirmation that God exists, that a sound so beautiful could only come from something larger and more powerful than this profane world. I don’t want Susan to retreat, to seek the security of the drab, yet familiar, world from which she comes, but to sing for all of us, to all of us.
If you speak to her before Saturday, please tell her that she is a person of worth and that there are those of us whose lives she touches with her voice. We don’t really care if she wins or loses the competition, we just want her voice to be part of our world. We want Susan to be part of our world, for in the midst of all its imperfections that she has come to know over the past few weeks, she brings us both peace and joy with the sweet sound of her voice.

Piers, if Susan Boyle cannot handle the pressure of this kind of thing at this stage, how in the hell is she likely to cope if she won BGT?
It’s the nature of the industry, you have been an editor and know only too well how the tabloids and media react to people like her.
Personally I think she is getting a bit full of herself, as do many others, especially after all that stupid wiggling rubbish at the semi-finals.
Personally I think Saxophonist Julian Smith is the most talented on the show and is Britains answer to Kenny G - the largest selling instrumentalist in the World !!!

Dear Piers Morgan,
I hope Your Mother is proud of You.
I shall indeed pray for Susan Boyle to win Britains Got Talent 2009.
Tell dear Susan, people want part of her talent.
She is like a beautiful tree, with lots of delicious fruits there. So it is a sign of her having something to offer that people now “get at” her.
There is a great compliment in that.
Maybe she should be kept away from the public until after the final, and then, for HEAVENS SAKE get her an agent.
If no one else wants to help her, call me and I shall come and stay by her side.
We love Your soul and spirit, Susan, and thank God for Piers Morgan, because he is the best older brother, You could ever get, and he will always stand behind You.

What you have written here is very noble, and painfully true. I hope that the comments about you playing with Susan’s heart are untrue.
What is wrong with us? What vile, bitter gall must be in the hearts of those who would look to make money from a very human outburst that also has been shown to be to be untrue! There is something dead and dark in the souls of such people, it is revolting and disgusting.
Susan’s voice is now known to be one of the world’s treasures. But it is housed in a very ordinary woman, as ordinary as I am, as ordinary as the vast majority of us who’ve lived our lives well removed from fame and riches. That vessel, that dear soul, needs to be nurtured and cared for; in blessing and protecting her, we bless ourselves.
Maybe, just maybe we can learn something from this. Maybe it will suddenly become clear to to us that there really is evil, not just the utilitarian evil of the moral relativist but the honest-to-goodness rottenness of those who would willingly destroy an object of beauty for filthy cash, and be pleased with themselves for doing it.
And maybe we will learn that there is such as thing as beauty; such a thing as hope; such a thing as glory.
May God Himself protect Susan Boyle if we are too wicked or stupid or lazy to do so.

Dear Mr. Morgan,
I know I’m late to the game here, but I too would like to express my gratitude to you for your wonderfully written defense and support of Susan.
Much like you, Amanda and Simon, I was blown away by Susan’s first performance on BGT. My heart was in my throat when she had the bit of a rough start during her second performance, but she pulled herself together and finshed strong.
Win or lose, she will always be an inspiration to me and I will wait, more or less patiently, for her first CD to be released.
I do not believe that she needs to win BGT in order to become a very successful singer. That being said, it would break my heart if she did not get the chance to perform for Her Majesty, since that has been her dream. That, and her promise to her mother seem to be the forces that drove her to audition for BGT in the first place, and I do hope that it comes true for her.
In any case, whatever the outcome, I am sure that all of us fans will be able to enjoy her talent for many years to come, and for that I thank her and the circumstances that made this happen, from the bottom of my heart.
I only hope that she realizes what a treasure she is, and how much happiness she has brought to so many people, just by being herself. I also hope that she has a chance to see all of the supportive posts to this blog, so that she knows that there are more good than bad people in the world, and that we are all pulling for her.
Thanks again for your wonderfully kind words.

Good on you Piers. and don’t we all” dream a dream” wishing things in life could be better. Since Susan came onto our tv scene she has made me change on how to not judge a book by it’s cover and to give that person a chance. We all have been guilty of this at some point and i feel that the people making nasty comments about Susan are the worse culprits. Susan’s voice is so magical and feels my heart with joy everytime i hear her sing and has made me realise that there is a glimmer of hope in all our lives whatever we are facing in life. Mr. Morgan,
That was a good defense.
BGT and other sites have collected lists of good wishes to Susan to be sent to her prior to the performance so she realizes how many folks value her, and how much. I think she would appreciate a copy of these comments, as other have said, coming as they do from every continent in the world, except Antarctica. (If the penguins heard her, they would love her too.)
Could your assistant(s) print them out & deliver them to her prior to the competition? At this point all Susan needs to think about is singing, not winning, because her fans will take care of that for her with their phone calls. Thank you.

Dear Piers,
Everyone here seems to agree with you and even though I do back you up on the fact that the press can sometimes be overwhelming, I believe that Susan needs to be able to handle the situation on her own, without someone else defending her over and over again. The reason people enter Britain’s Got Talent, is because they believe they have the unique talent into winning the competition and becoming famous. If someone like SUSAN who by the way is a exceptional singer, can not handle the pressure of media and the stories that will be written about her social life, then she should quit and leave the fame for those that can handle it. By defending her, you will create more discussion about not giving others a chance or the fact that if you give someone else a good comment, the press will trigger on this issue.
You may argue that the press is to blame for her stressing out, but I would argue that it is ITV, the producers of Britain’s Got Talent who are creating so much stories about her life via the press, in order to create more viewers to the show. We all know that in order to create so much fuss about a certain show, is to create “disturbing†news which will lead the press to discuss it and will create more viewers. Sometime ago there was a big story about how the producers of the UK versions of “Big Brother STARS†created the episodes to be disturbing in the eyes of the people, which did not only create criticism, but also created more viewers for the channel and more money was produced by expensive commercials during the time of the show. You may discuss that this is not the fact, but the reality is different.
We all know that Susan Boyle will be a star despite if she wins or not, but since there is more “disturbing†news about her than anyone else and since she is being defended by famous people as yourself which will be discussed in the press over and over again, she is more likely to win the competition – not because of her fabulous voice and personality, but because people will feel SORRY FOR HER…

Don’t react, it gives them what they want, to try and make you appear less sweet and talented than you are.

As a single mum bringing up 3 children I occassionally used the F word. Sometimes because I was disappointed but usualy when I had reached my limit with something the kids had done or said. I know exactly where Susan was coming from yesterday. I say good on her at least she is human (not the Angel the media has dubbed her)
What I find hard to beleive is the lack of understanding and compassion that people are showing towards her. 150 people raced to the window to spy on her talking to the policemen. SHAME!!!! I hope they never find themselves in need of some human kindness one day.

Hello again,
It occurred to me that there is much more Susan Boyle can do for the world, than “just” make us all happy and feel life is beautiful, through her remarkable voice, which I - sorry Elaine - find better than her idol Elaine Paige.
Once this competition is over and Susan Boyle starts her world-tour and recording songs and singing in musicals, let us stop one moment:
Susan Boyle was deprived of sufficient oxygen during birth. She has the opportunity to stand up and create a charity to help raise the awareness of the importance of oxygen during pregnancy and birth. It should be coordinated with doctors and midwifes to create a more safe routine. Another branch of that charity could be to give others, who suffer from the same situation, a possibility to sing in some kind of “Susan Boyle O2 Choir”.

Hi Piers. I love BGT but this year has been ridiculous. Some of the acts put through to the semi final are embarrrassing. For instance, that ridiculous woman who went topless. How could you expect to put her on a stage before The Queen.
With regard to Susan Boyle, yes she has a good voice, but thats it. Her personality does not match up and the way she behaved after her live performance on Sunday was cringeworthy.
She has been given too much hype by the Judges and the media and it has given her an unfair advantage.
I feel sorry for the other contestants who, must have thought their efforts were futile due to the constant comparisons with Susan Boyle.
She is offensive to look at, and her personality leaves a lot to be desired and her outburst of late is unacceptable behaviour. You cant expect anyone to feel sorry for her (because of her sudden fame). She must have weighed up the pro’s and cons before entering the show and as the old saying goes, ‘if you cant stand the heat’ etc.
If she wins now it will be a travesty. I cannot believe that real talent as in Shaun Smith, Julian Smith and many more, could be compared to a loud mouthed woman of straw such as Susan Boyle.
Sorry but I think the Judges have got it completely wrong this year with many of the acts put through to the semi final and I think sentiment has clouded the professional judgement in many cases

I am deeply concerned about Susan Boyle. I think she is a vulnerable person who has had to swallow down alot of hurt and loneliness over the years and covers it up by making jokes and saying it doesn’t matter. Well it does matter. She has been more courageous than most of us would have been able to be. I am so proud of her. Thank you for giving us the chance to know her. I hope you will communicate to her that she inspires us and that she is a WINNER no matter what the outcome of the final is.

Yes you are absolutely correct.Susan Boyle is a singer and nothing to do with any thing about her private and personal life. Media please for god sake leave people’s personal life . You guys(media) thinks we the general public is interested in personal life of celebrities. We are not interested in there private and personal life. Think twice to do a wrong thing to others.

well said Piers, but BGT is a media circus anyway and then there is the fame attached to it when folks go on. You and the other judges should be protecting Susan as much as you can from these things. Not because of her disabilities, but because she is new to this like others before her and the ones that will come after.
Susan rocks in my book and she has come a long way on BGT. Please look after her or the press will eat her alive you should know that better than most Piers. Yes what she has alleged to of done makes the papers, as it sells them sadly. Where did all the feel good stories go. mmm

Dear Mr. Piers
We are writing from Bangkok, Thailand. We would like to tell you that we are impressed by Susan Boyle singing. She has the great power that touched our hearts. We feel at happy everytime we watch her fulfilling her dream at the audtion.
I think Susan is carrying a message from heaven to tell us to be kind and considerate to one another.
For me and my friends, we like everything about her, the way she dresses, the way she talks, the way she smiles. We felt that she was kind, sincere, natural, friendly and fun to be with. Please tell her to keep these gifts from heaven and be herself for we love her the way she is.
We will love to hear more of her songs and we will buy all her CDs whether she wins the BGT or not.
Somebody there please give her a big hug for us.
Thank you very much.

Piers. You really need to be aiming this at your ‘media mates’. It seems as always their intention to build someone up and then tear them down. A small proportion of the general public will follow that mindset but there are far more of us that deplore the way our media don’t celebrate our home grown talent as your friends over the pond do. I for one will never forget the impact Susan’s first appearance had on me. I must have watched a hundred times on YouTube and when I’m feeling a bit down, I watch it again with the belief that Susan is living the dream for everyone of us. But please, please I beg you to take care of her.

Susan deserves to win but all the media hype has put untold pressure onto her shoulders. Of course she would react the way she did to the folk winding her up, she is at a very emotional and stressful time, yes she entered the competition but she didn’t expect people to go so overboard about her performances. Give her a break then she’ll have a chance of winning, which is what she deserves. I only hope that once that happens someone will help her to cope psychologically with all the publicity she will get. Good luck Susan, keep as calm as you can and do your best on the day, no-one can ask more than that of you.

“Offensive to look at”?
[open-mouthed]
In what *possible* way? Two ears, two eyes, a nose & a mouth (and maybe a bit of hair) are all pretty much givens in my book. Why don’t people take a look around and see that there are far worse to aim their destructive vitriol at.

It is unbelievable what’s mentionned in the press. Even here in Belgium rumours spread. One minute everybody loves her and the day after she is said to insult and scream the worst things… whether it’s true is rather the question…

Here Here!
I think Susan is an inspiration, I had no idea about her troubled history. I don’t think I’d waste my cash buying a newspaper intent on making her life difficult for the sake of a quick buck.
Piers, you hit the nail on the head with this one mate.

Thank you for defending Susan Boyle.
I think it is just mean of Lily Allen to comment negatively on Britains Got Talent. It’s not a contest for professionals.
I have to say that I can see Susan Boyle in Disney films and as a Harry Potter character. I would surely buy her c.d.s’ She has an incredible voice and not only that, she has made the universe feel something!! That is AMAZING.
Shaheem has time on his side and he is wonderful, as well.
I hope Susan will continue and I hope she wins…but either way…I hope the contestants will be gracious. They both have careers if they want them.
And…you…are adorable. xxoo

Susan, you’ve got the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard! Thank you for sharing your God given talent. It’s tough to face those who seek to tear one down, but please show them how awful they are by being the wonderful person you are. Remember, you’re special in God’s eyes.
Piers, thank you from the bottom of my heart for standing up for Susan. You’re a great writer and valient gentleman!
And yes, my heart, along with millions and millions of people around the world, feel for Susan as well.
Our family is praying for you, Susan!
With best wishes,

Well said Piers.
The day Susan sang on air for the first time , my thoughts were echoing a lot of what is now transpiring, I feared that the publicity would be too much for this quiet lady.
I think Susan is brilliant, but in a way I hope she doesn’t win on Saturday, but quietly moves into a long steady multi million pound recording contract with Simon . Only in the glare of her true fans & friends , of which I suspect there will be droves.
Good luck Susan and again thanks Piers.

In looking over this past week, the press has taken every opportunity to twist everything around and whatever they did is not working. And, as far as Susan is concerned I do not think she was ever ready to pack her bags. She is in it to Win…she is no quitter. Susan has FAITH in herself and we have to hold our FAITH, as well. Part of being in competition is being able to be strong enough to take defeat and be proud enough not to walk away. Not everyone can be a winner 100% of the time. But, Susan has proven remarkable concentration and she just keeps right on going and smiles along the way. She’s brilliant! After reading last nite, her new performance of Memories has pulled 16.7 million views on You Tube and those views have been equally proportioned thruout the World, and Great Britian has pulled their share. It’s not just the US putting her over the top. I thought that the Public confidence may have been shaken, but I do not believe the people of Great Britian fell for all this malerky. Remember she won the public vote on the first semi-final. Sure the votes might get split up more on the Final but believe in the people. Susan is a true competitor and she is strong, she does not falter easily. She wants to do her best performance ever, and as long as she accomplishes that is what matters to her…not to win or lose. She wants to do her very best, and I do not believe her confidence has been shaken. And, remember when she sings her song, every note is for each and every one of us. She brings us Hope! She brings us Happiness! Be proud of Susan, she has come on a long journey to get to where she is now….have FAITH & Believe!

Well said, Piers. I’ve had worse said about me, but one just has to accept that only morons would stoop that low. Susan is an amazing woman, with an amazing talent. I can’t wait to buy her CDs - all of them. I congratulate everyone on the show, but for me, Susan’s special. Extraordinary. She moves me to tears every time I hear her perform. I hope she delivers the performance of her life on Saturday. Susan, remember the WORLD LOVE YOU! Piers, you are such a gentleman. The world needs more men like you.

I’m so glad theres people out there defending her. She doesn’t deserve people critisising her and i don’t know why Lily Allen says Susan can’t sing becuase Lily doesn’t sing she just speaks. I really hope susan wins becuase then it will show her that there are more people wanting her to win rather than fail. On the final tomorrow i’m going to vote for her more than once, definetly!

I can not beleive how vicious the UK press is to Susan Boyle. Their treatment of her reminds me of the movie “Man who would be King”. The story line is simple - build her up, then find one human weakness and try to destroy her. I hope she wins, she probably could use the money and she wants to perform for the Queen. She seems, in all her interviews to be a nice person who deserves better than she’s getting from the press.

I personally am really shocked that BGT didn’t see this coming since they were fully aware of Susan’s worldwide Appeal…Why wasn’t she more protected from the first day she arrived in London? I really am quite upset you allowed this to happen to her…She is so loved by fans all over the world and if anything happens to her under BGT’s watch, I am afraid Fans will come a hunting for you all..Maybe we should have sent the US Marines over to guard her if you at BGT weren’t able to…Please Please pamper this woman the few days before the biggest day of her Life…She needs rest, calming environment, rehearsing her song for the Final and most of all she needs to Know that her Fans Love her and are very protective of her….This woman is bring Hope and inspiration to so many and we want her taken care of properly.
Shame on whoever didn’t see this coming..

Pardon my suspicions if they are ill-founded, But I can’t help but wonder if there is not someone else, some bigger power, behind those two reporters who intentionally harrassed and provoked Susan. And this happened within a day of her being accused of a similar outburst which she denies happening.
Makes me wonder who stands to gain from derailing her chances at winning BGT.
Could the bookies who stand to loose monumentally if she wins have instigated a slanderous story, and then hired two journalistic thugs.
Or, given that, win or loose, she is an already gaurenteed gold mine for a recording contract, could there be a financial motivation to have another singing winner who would yield another lucritive recording contract.
Pardon my suspicions, but something does not sit right with all of what is happening to Susan.

Thank you, Piers. Thank you for defending Susan.
I think she’s wonderful. With or without the outstanding ability to sing. She reminds me so much of my A-level music teacher - she simply oozes enthusiasm and a good-natured personality. And congrats to her for having the courage and self-belief to stand up in front of hundreds, and now millions, of people and show everyone what she can do. Even if she doesn’t come across as a natural entertainer, something in her wants people to appreciate her singing, her voice - a voice that deserves admiration. I love that about her. I ENVY her for that! I know I’ll barely get through my music recital next week for my first year at uni, and that’s only going to be in front of two people!
She absolutely does not deserve all the bitchy comments and sniping from newspaper and magazine columnists who, probably, wish they could do the same, or have that courage (they’re blatantly just jealous and hide behind black & white pages). I wish I could tell her that.
I think Susan is more parti
